GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Greg Urich (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) went the distance for Gettysburg to help the Bullets defeat Susquehanna 6-2 in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday.
Urich (1-0) gave up two runs and six hits, striking out a career-high eight on the afternoon to pick up his first collegiate victory.
Chris Ferris (Scituate, MA/Boston College) paced Gettysburg's (14-12-2) attack, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs while Henry Mullen (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) went 3-for-4 with an RBI. For the Crusaders (8-17), Bob Haile posted a 2-for-4 outing and had the only RBI in the losing effort.
Susquehanna got on the board first, but the Bullets answered quickly and held on for the win.
Chris Mothershed led off the game with a single and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and a fly out. He opened the scoring on a wild pitch by Urich.
In the bottom of the inning, Ferris doubled to the gap in left center, plating Justin Steele (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) and Bashaw. Luteran followed with an RBI single, giving Gettysburg a lead it would not surrender.
The Crusaders scored a run in the third, but did not manage another serious threat until the ninth.
The Bullets added three late-inning insurance runs. The home squad put together three straight singles in the seventh that plated Ferris to make the score, 4-2.
In the eighth, Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) greeted Susquehanna reliever Matt Smart with a double to right center. Smith followed a groundout with an RBI double to center. He later scored on a single by Bashaw.
Despite the breathing room for Gettysburg, Susquehanna did not go quietly in the ninth. The Crusaders loaded the bases with two outs before Urich used the last of his 124 pitches to get Mothershed to fly out to center.
The Bullets will play their first night game of the season on Wednesday, facing Villa Julie in Hanover, Md. Game time is 6 p.m.
