Gettysburg set to host CC playoffs after 21-2 victory over Dickinson; Bullet defense surrenders seven shots

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Megan Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton) and Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County) combined for 10 goals, and the Gettysburg defense held Dickinson to seven shots en route to a 21-2 victory in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse action on Thursday.

Murphy, who increased her program-record point total to 117, found the net six times while Blankenship added four goals as the fourth-ranked Bullets (15-1, 8-0 CC) clinched the No. 1 seed in next week’s CC playoffs. Gettysburg will host the conference’s postseason tournament on Saturday, May 3 and Sunday, May 4.

Paced by stingy defense around the cage and a game-high six ground balls from Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville), the Bullets held the Red Devils (2-9, 1-6 CC) off the scoreboard for the entire first half while building an 11-0 halftime lead. Gettysburg outshot Dickinson 20-3 over the first 30 minutes.

Danielle Scholz scored both goals for the Red Devils, snapping her team’s 95-minute scoring drought in the opening minutes of the second half.

Held without a goal for the first time all season in an 18-2 win over Bryn Mawr on Tuesday, Murphy returned to the goal-scoring column early and often on Thursday. She opened the scoring at the 1:52 mark, then struck for two more goals in less than five minutes to help the Bullets jump to a 5-0 lead and force a Dickinson timeout at 6:38.

Blankenship followed with her first goal of the day at 8:12 and Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) scored off a feed from Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park Country School) to make it 7-0. Blankenship converted a free-position goal at 15:44, then set up Murphy’s fourth goal minutes later push the lead to 9-0.

Lowe finished a solo run at 20:19 and Blankenship scored off an Ashley Froman (Glen Arm, MD/Loch Raven) assist 52 seconds later to make it 11-0 heading into halftime.

Scholz scored off a feed from Elle Beckert at 32:50 to put the Red Devils on the scoreboard, but the Bullets rattled off six straight goals and 10 of the game’s final 11 markers. Murphy’s sixth goal of the game, off a feed from Delauney at 39:53, made her the second player in program history with 80 goals in a season. Colleen Dunn tallied a program-record 88 in 1995.

Freshman Elyse Goldweitz (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) netted her first collegiate goal with 5:54 remaining while fellow newcomer Dawn Mennen (Beach Haven, NJ/Shawnee) tallied her second collegiate goal in as many games, also late in the second half.

With her seven-point outing, Murphy moved into second place on the program’s all-time career points list (261), surpassing former teammate Becky Bucha (256 from 1999-2002). Murphy needs 12 points to become the program’s all-time point leader. In addition, Blankenship tied Bucha for second place on the program’s career assists list (73).

Gettysburg wraps up its regular season on Saturday at home against Muhlenberg. Game time is 1 p.m.
