Murphy breaks CC record with nine points in Gettysburg’s 17-7 win over Muhlenberg; Bullets to face Ursinus in conference semifinals

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Megan Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton) collected nine points to break the Centennial Conference (CC) record for points in a single season as fourth-ranked Gettysburg downed Muhlenberg 17-7 in CC women’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

Murphy scored seven times and added two assists on the day, giving her 126 points to surpass the mark of 125 set by Swarthmore’s Julie Noyes in 1994. With 87 goals in 2003, Murphy is one shy of the program record set by Colleen Dunn in 1995.

After wrapping up their conference season with a perfect 9-0 record, the Bullets (16-1, 9-0 CC) will face Ursinus in the CC semifinals on Saturday. Franklin & Marshall will battle Washington in the other semfinal, with the conference championship game slated for Sunday. All three games will be played at Gettysburg’s Memorial Field.

Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County) also enjoyed a landmark day in the win, scoring four goals and dishing out four assists to become the third player in program history to record at least 90 points in a season. She has scored 46 goals and handed out a program-record 50 assists for 96 points. Dunn (101 in 1995) and Murphy are the other two to reach the 90-point mark.

Ashley Froman (Glen Arm, MD/Loch Raven) scooped a game-high eight of the Bullets’ 50 ground balls and also got into the offensive act with her second goal of the season.

Courtney Tapkas scored a game-high three goals for the Mules (8-7, 4-5 CC), giving her 73 markers in her freshman season. Lynsey Caldwell also recorded three points on a goal and two assists while Diana Bleakley made 10 saves on 44 Gettysburg shots.

Similar to Thursday’s win over Dickinson, the Bullets used a dominating first-half performance to notch the victory. Gettysburg outshot Muhlenberg 25-5 and held a 33-9 advantage in ground balls during the game’s first 30 minutes.

Bleakley made three saves as the Bullets missed on their first six shots before Blankenship opened the scoring with an unassisted goal at 4:39. On the ensuing draw control, Blankenship won possession and threaded a cross-field pass to Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville), who converted for a 2-0 lead just 10 seconds after Blankenship’s game-opener.

Murphy scored her first of the day off a feed from Blankenship at 11:09 to make it 3-0. Froman added her eighth collegiate goal just over two minutes later, picking up a ground ball in the fan and finishing a spinning drive for a four-goal lead.

Murphy converted a free-position goal at 14:54 and made it 6-0 off a Blankenship feed 65 seconds later.

Keyed by nine first-half caused turnovers, the Gettysburg defense held the Mules without a shot for the game’s first 17 minutes and kept the visitors off the scoreboard until Tapkas scored off a feed from Sarah Bowman at 19:28.

Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) assisted on goals by Blankenship and Kathy Delauney (Lutherville, MD/Roland Park Country School) in a span of 2:56 and Murphy capped the 3-0 burst with another free-position goal at 25:13, making it 9-1.

Shannon Donohue and Caldwell scored for the Mules in the last three minutes of the half, but the Bullets opened the second half with a 5-0 run to put the game out of reach.

Murphy tied the CC points record with a free-position goal at 52:39 and claimed sole possession of the milestone with an unassisted tally at 53:50. With 270 career points through Saturday, she needs three more to break the Dunn’s program record of 272.

Farrell finished with one goal and two assists while collecting six ground balls and a team-best five draw controls. Blankenship, Jess Hanson (Hunt Valley, MD/Maryvale Prep) and Kathryn Grassel (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) also picked up six ground balls on the day, helping Gettysburg top the 50-mark in that category for the second straight game.

The Bullets return to action on Saturday at home against Ursinus in the CC semifinals. Game time is to be determined. Gettysburg is seeking its third conference title in 2003.
