GETTYSBURG, PA - Damien Jones turned in a 3-for-6 performance for Elizabethtown as the Blue Jays (19-2) cruised to a 15-7 victory over Gettysburg in non-conference baseball action on Monday.
Jones also drove in three and scored three times, while Brad Duppstadt added a 4-for-6 afternoon with two RBIs and two runs scored.
For the Bullets (15-16-2), Mike Luteran (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) and Henry Mullen (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) both went 2-for-5 and scored a run while driving in one apiece. For Mullen, it was his team-leading 16th multi-hit game.
An early pitchers' duel quickly turned into a slugfest, with Elizabethtown stringing together five hits to score three runs in the third inning. The visitors then added two more in the fourth.
Gettysburg answered with six in the bottom of the inning to go up 6-5, but the lead would not last long.
In the fifth, Mark Dixon came to the plate with men on second and third and laced a two-run single down the left field line. After a Bullets' pitching change, the Blue Jays took advantage of two Gettysburg errors on the same play to push Dixon across with the eventual winning run. The squad tacked on another run in the inning, and scored in three of the last four innings to plate a total of 15 runs.
With Elizabethtown holding a 5-0 advantage, the Bullets put together a rally of their own in the bottom of the fourth to grab their only lead of the game, 6-5. Chris Ferris (Scituate, MA/Boston College) walked and moved to second on a single by Luteran. He later scored on an RBI single by Mullen for the Bullets' first run. The team used five hits and an error in the inning to score six runs, taking the lead and chasing Blue Jays' starter Matt Eshenour.
Eshenour was relieved by Matt Woehnker, who held Gettysburg to just one more run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings to improve his record to 4-0.
The contest was the first meeting between the schools since 1998, when the Bullets defeated Elizabethtown, 4-0.
Gettysburg wraps up its home slate on Tuesday against Catholic University of America. Game time is 3:30.
