BALTIMORE, Md. - Mike Durgala hit a two-run home run in the eighth to lift sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins past Gettysburg 5-4 in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Wednesday.
With the Bullets (16-17-2, 9-8-1 CC) holding a 4-3 advantage, Durgala drilled a round tripper to left field, helping the Blue Jays (29-5, 16-2 CC) to their fifth straight victory against Gettysburg. Durgala was 1-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the game.
Craig Cetta went 2-for-4 with a home run, a run scored and two RBIs and Paul Winterling added a 2-for-4 performance with two runs scored in the winning effort.
Mike Luteran (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) led Gettysburg, going 3-for-4 while Henry Mullen (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) and Justin Steele (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) each had a hit and an RBI.
The Bullets gave the defending CC champions all they could handle, but Johns Hopkins scored the final three runs to come away with the 5-4 victory.
After Gettysburg grabbed a 4-2 lead in the sixth inning, Winterling led off the bottom of the frame with a double and came around to score on an error to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Winterling then started the eighth with a double to left center and then came around to score on Durgala's ninth long ball of the year.
Sven Stafford retired the side in the top of the ninth for his third save of the year.
The Bullets got on the scoreboard first with a single run in the fourth. Luteran singled with two outs and touched home on Mullen's RBI double down the left-field line.
The Blue Jays answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 2-1 advantage. Durgala walked before Cetta knocked his fifth home run of the season over the center field fence.
Gettysburg struck for two runs of its own in the top of the third to reclaim the lead. Austin Ball (Farmingdale, NY/Hills East) walked and Joe Gossweiler (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) doubled to start the frame. Patrick Flynn (New York, NY/Poly Prep Country), who drove in his first collegiate RBI in a 1-0 victory against Washington on Saturday, hit a sacrifice fly to left field to knot the score at 2. Steele then brought Gossweiler home on a single through the left side.
The Bullets added a run in the sixth when Chris Ferris (Scitute, MA/Boston College) scored on an error for the 4-2 lead.
Matt Righter (5-0) pitched a scoreless eighth to pick up the victory.
Gettysburg starter Dan Armstrong (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) allowed three runs on four hits in six innings of work while Matt Donohue (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) (4-3) took the loss after allowing the Durgala home run.
Johns Hopkins will host the CC tournament starting on Saturday. The Bullets season ends after finishing sixth in the CC.
