GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Matt Donohue (Livingston, NJ/Livingston) and Mike Epstein (Cedar Grove, NJ/Cedar Grove) tossed back-to-back complete games in a Gettysburg doubleheader sweep against Haverford in Centennial Conference (CC) baseball action on Saturday.
In the early game, Donohue held the Fords (11-7-1, 5-3 CC) to one run on seven hits and struck out seven to lead the Bullets (7-8-2, 2-2-1 CC) to a 13-1 victory for their first CC victory of the year.
Epstein did not give up an earned run on the afternoon while his teammates continued to provide offensive support by attacking the Fords' pitching and taking advantage of 10 errors in the doubleheader. The squad took an 8-3 decision in the nightcap.
Gettysburg, who used the same starting lineup in both games, got at least two hits from seven of the nine batsmen. Mike Luteran (Livingston, NJ/Livingston), Justin Steele (Manahawkin, NJ/Southern Regional) and Nathan Smith (Milford,NY/Cooperstown) chipped in three hits apiece.
Dave Werthan paced Haverford with a 3-for-6 performance and Jonas Clark added two hits in five trips to the plate.
In the opener, the Bullets wasted little time in taking control of the game.
With two outs in the first, Chris Ferris (Scituate, MA/Boston College) walked and stole second. Luteran followed with an RBI single to right. Tobin Whitman (Lyme Center, NH/Hanover) pinch ran for Luteran. After a walk and a Fords' error, Whitman scored the eventual game-winning run on a double from Joe Gossweiler (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park).
Gettysburg would use timely hitting and seven Haverford errors to add three more runs in the inning. The Bullet would tack on eight more runs in the final five frames to cruise to the victory.
The Fords got on the board with a bases loaded walk to John Oh that scored Werthan. Oh was then erased at second on a fielder's choice to end the threat.
Gettysburg looked to build on the momentum and start a winning streak in game two.
The contest was an up-and-down affair that saw Haverford open the scoring in the top of the third when Aaron Rabinowitz, scored on a blooper by Crispin Vary that fell among three Bullets.
Gettysburg answered in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Ron Lettieri (Hempstead, NY/South Side) that scored Smith, and both teams scored once in the fourth.
The score remained tied at 2 until the Bullets' half of the sixth. Luteran doubled down the line in right and Tom Gallione (Demarest, NJ/Northern Valley) pinch ran. After Henry Mullen (Massapequa Park, NY/Massapequa) was intentionally walked, Steele doubled to left center, plating the winning runs. Gettysburg crossed the plate four more times in the inning.
The Fords used an error and a base hit to score in the top of the seventh, but could get no closer.
The Bullets return to action Tuesday at Franklin & Marshall. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
