Top-ranked Salisbury cruises past Gettysburg, 17-2

SALISBURY, Md. – Josh Bergey and Cory O’Neil each netted hat tricks to lead top-ranked Salisbury over No. 5 Gettysburg 17-2 in non-conference men’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

 Kevin Gemmell added both of his goals during a 5-0 Sea Gull run to open the game, helping the hosts build a 9-1 halftime lead and cruise to their first win in the last four meetings with the Bullets (7-3). Bergey and Chris Phillips (2 goals, 3 assists) paced Salisbury (10-0) with five points apiece.

 Nick Purkat (Annandale, VA/W.T. Woodson) and Chase Stewart (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) scored for Gettysburg, which was held to its lowest single-game goal total since 1980. Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola Blakefield) made 16 saves on the day.

 In addition to Gemmell’s two markers, Bergey, Phillips and Dan Boyer each scored during the opening run to give the Sea Gulls a commanding 6-1 lead after the first quarter. Purkat’s goal was the Bullets’ lone tally of the first half.

  Two goals from O’Neil and one from Bergey pushed the Salisbury lead to 9-1 at the break. The Sea Gulls then outshot their guests 16-2 in the third quarter, scoring six more times for a 15-2 advantage. Stewart netted his team-leading 19th goal of the season in the third for Gettysburg.

 Salisbury outshot the Bullets 47-18 on the day while holding an opponent to two or fewer goals for the third time this season.

 Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at McDaniel. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
