Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Megan Murphy (Wilton, CT/Wilton) and Amy Farrell (Ambler, PA/Upper Dublin) combined for 12 goals to lead fifth-ranked Gettysburg past Washington 18-9 in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s lacrosse action on Saturday.

Murphy scored four of her career-high seven goals during a 10-0 run across both halves that turned a one-goal deficit into an insurmountable 11-2 second-half lead. Farrell, coming off a career-best six-point performance against Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday, tallied a career-high five goals and also dished out one assist to help the Bullets (10-0, 4-0 CC) extend their program-best start.

Julika Blankenship (Crumpton, MD/Kent County) added two goals and handed out a game-high four assists in the win. Liz Borucki (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) made six saves, including two key stops on free-position attempts in the first half, and scooped eight ground balls to backstop a defense that held the CC’s highest-scoring team to five goals in the game’s first 55 minutes.

Betty Weller and Janet Studdiford scored two goals and added one assist apiece for the Shorewomen (9-1, 5-1 CC), who saw their season-opening winning streak halted at nine games.

Washington jumped to a 2-1 lead on goals from Paige Heller and Studdiford in the game’s opening seven minutes, but the rest of the day belonged to Gettysburg.

Eighteen seconds after Studdiford’s goal, Ashley Froman (Glen Arm, MD/Loch Raven) assisted on a spinning rip from Kathryn Grassel (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills East) to knot the game at 2 and ignite the decisive run.

Murphy scored off a behind-the-net feed from Grassel just 30 seconds later to put the Bullets ahead to stay. Murphy completed her hat trick with an underhanded lefty finish at 11:28 and Farrell scored on a solo run directly off the ensuing draw control to make it 5-2.

Cassidy Zappacosta (Monkton, MD/Maryvale Prep) netted her lone goal of the day at 16:51 and the Blankenship-to-Murphy connection clicked for the third time to give Gettysburg a 7-2 lead at the 18:56 mark. Farrell converted a free-position goal at 22:50 and scored off a Murphy feed with 24 seconds left in the half to make it 9-2 at the break.

Murphy and Blankenship collected unassisted markers in the first 2:37 of the second half to cap the run. Murphy’s sixth goal of the day gave Gettysburg a 10-goal lead at 13-3 and the Bullets led by as many as 12 before the Shorewomen tallied four goals in the last five minutes to set the final margin.

With the win, Gettysburg has now posted victories against the other three teams to reach the CC playoffs each of the past two years. The Bullets downed Ursinus 17-6 on Mar. 22 and stopped F&M 21-10 on Wednesday.

Murphy’s seven-goal explosion gave her a career-best 47 goals this season. Blankenship moved into sixth place on the program’s career assists list (50) and into ninth place in career points (126). The Bullets scored on 18 of 29 shots on the afternoon (a season-best 62 percent).

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at home against Dickinson. Game time is 4 p.m.
