ALLENTOWN, Pa. - Jackie Pareso (Washington, PA/Canevin Catholic) knocked in the key hit and went 2-for-3 with one RBI in game two as Gettysburg split with Muhlenberg 4-5 and 3-2 in Centennial Conference (CC) doubleheader softball action on Sunday.
Molly Gale (Franklin, MI/Wylie E. Groves) went 3-for-7 with four RBIs, two doubles and one run scored on the afternoon. Adrienne Simmons (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) added a 2-for-2 performance and scored one run in game one while Pareso picked up her fifth win of the season in game two.
The Mules (5-14, 4-1 CC) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in game two, but the Bullets (11-5, 3-1 CC) battled back to score two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to hand Muhlenberg its first conference loss of the season while collecting their third CC win.
In the top of the fourth, Gale hit her sixth double of the season to bring in Stef Mastropaolo (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) to put the Bullets on the board. Gale then tied the game at two, scoring off Megan Pilarcik's (Middletown, MD/Middletown) RBI single to left field.
One inning later, Jenna Pabst (Boonton, Twp., NJ/Mountain Lakes) and Simmons each singled and advanced another base on an error, before Pareso cranked out a RBI single to centerfield that drove in Pabst for the game-winning run.
On the mound, Pareso ended the game with three easy outs in the final three innings for the victory.
The Mule's Kristina Cartolano hit an RBI line drive to third that allowed Nicole Sarno to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to capture game one, 5-4.
Down 1-0 after the first four innings, Pabst got on first with a bunt single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Simmons to open the fifth. Mastropaolo then ripped a line drive past the shortstop that allowed Pabst to score and tie the game at one.
Gettysburg added one more run after Gale hit first double of the afternoon, allowing Mastropaolo to score to take the 2-1 lead.
Muhlenberg answered right back and scored three runs on a triple by Jackie Maser in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead at 4-2.
Simmons opened the seventh with a single to right field and advanced to second on Pareso's single to third. Faced with one out, Gale smacked the ball to centerfield that drove in Simmons and Pareso to tie the game at 4-4, but it was not enough as Muhlenberg went on to win game on Cartolano's RBI single in the seventh.
Bullet starter Shannon Kiry (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) allowed four runs on eight while striking out three and walking one.
Gettysburg returns to action Tuesday for a CC doubleheader at Dickinson. Game one begins at 5 p.m.
