Box Score vs. Ursinus (Game 1) | Box Score vs. Muhlenberg (Game 2)
WESTMINSTER, Md. - Freshman Shannon Kiry (Cinnaminson, NJ/Cinnaminson) threw a two-hit shutout in game one as Gettysburg defeated Ursinus 2-0, before falling to Muhlenberg 7-3 in game two of the Centennial Conference (CC) softball championships held at McDaniel on Saturday.
Kiry recorded her second shutout of the season while Stef Mastropaolo (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) tallied her fifth home run this year, helping the Bullets (24-10) reach day two of the championships. Gettysburg will have a rematch with Ursinus in an elimination game on Sunday.
The Bullets-Bears winner will have to defeat Muhlenberg twice in order to claim the CC crown.
Megan Pilarcik (Middletown, MD/Middletown) went 4-for-6 with two doubles and one run scored on the day while Molly Gale (Franklin, MI/Wylie E. Groves) added a 2-for-4 performance with one double and one run scored in game two.
In the bottom of the second, Michelle Oravis (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) hit an RBI single to knock in Pilarcik for the game-winning run in game one.
Pilarcik hit her first double of the game into right field to set up Gettysburg's scoring opportunity. Oravis then stepped up to the plate with two outs and hit one to centerfield allowing Pilarcik to score for the 1-0 lead.
Mastropaolo added another run after collecting her second home run against Ursinus this year with hitting one over the fence to open the six inning.
The Bears recorded their first hit off the day in the top of the third off of Eileen Caldwell's double to centerfield, but the Bullets managed to stop Ursinus with a runner on third and two outs.
Jamie Ruhling tallied the Bears only other hit in the fifth with a double to left field. Once again, Gettysburg halted the comeback attempt when Pilarcik dove to get the ball and tossed it to Jackie Pareso (Washington, PA/Canevin Catholic) waiting at third to make the tag for the third out of the inning.
Kiry allowed two hits and struck out two in seven innings of work to pick up her 10th complete-game victory and improve to 9-5 on the year.
With game two tied at 3-3, Muhlenberg exploded for four runs in the top of the ninth to capture game two, 7-3.
The Bullets took a 1-0 lead after their first time up at bat. Adrienne Simmons (Douglassville, PA/Daniel Boone) got hit by a pitch to push Jenna Pabst (Boonton Twp., NJ/Mountain Lakes) to second, before Pareso's sacrifice bunt allowed her to reach third and eventually cross the plate on the second out the inning.
The Mules' Becki Toth bunted with two outs in the third to drive in Kristen Best and tie the game at 1. Muhlenberg kept the momentum going into the fourth with Meghan Woods two-run homer that gave the Mules a 3-1 advantage and first lead of the game.
The Bullets battled back to tie the game at 3 that same inning. Mastropaolo reached on a fielder's choice, followed by Gale hitting a double and both scoring on Pilarcik's two RBI single to centerfield.
Both teams were held scoreless for four straight innings until Amanda Ibey and Kristina Cartalono each tallied an RBI singles to help the Muhlenberg pull away for good and keep the Bullets scoreless in the ninth inning.
For the Mules, Cartalona allowed three runs on five hits, one walk and struck out two in nine innings for the win.
With her home run in game one, Mastropaolo ties the program record for home runs in a season with five set by former teammate Mandy Wilson (1998-2002) in 1999.
