WESTMINSTER, Md. - Samantha Ibey went 2-for-4 with a home run while Jackie Maser knocked in the game-winning run to lead Muhlenberg past Gettysburg 8-4 in the Centennial Conference (CC) softball championship game on Sunday.
Ibey scored the first and last runs of the game for the Mules (14-19), helping them rally back from a 2-0 deficit after the first three innings to capture their third CC championship. Maser hit a two RBI double to left field in the top of the sixth inning to put Muhlenberg ahead for good to win the title since back-to-back victories in 2000 and 2001.
Stef Mastropaolo (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford) smacked her second home run of the tournament and sixth long ball this year to break the program record for home runs in a season of five set by Mandy Wilson in 1999.
The Bullets (26-11) defeated Ursinus 2-1 in an elimination game and Muhlenberg 5-1 in the championship round earlier in the day to force a decisive game seven.
After falling in the first meeting of the day, the Mules used the fourth and sixth inning to score four runs and hold Gettysburg scoreless in the final four innings en route to an 8-4 victory.
Mastropaolo gave the Bullets a 2-0 lead after the first inning, hitting the ball 210 feet and over the centerfield fence to also score Pabst.
Gettysburg managed two hits while Muhlenberg tallied one hit over the next two innings, before the Mules collected six of their 12 hits in the fourth inning.
Fueled by Kelly Berg's two RBI single to centerfield, Muhlenberg put four runs on the board to take a 4-2 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Mastropaolo walked and Molly Gale (Franklin, MI/Wylie E. Groves) hit a line drive to left field to get two on with one out. Megan Pilarcik (Middletown, MD/Middletown) then ripped an RBI single up the middle, allowing Mastropaolo and Gale to score and tie the game at four.
The Mules broke the 4-all tie when Maser hit a two-run double and Ibey smacked her second home run of the day to hold on for the 8-4 win.
Jackie Pareso (Washington, PA/Canevin Catholic) picked up the loss to finish the season 7-1. She allowed eight runs on 12 hits while striking out two in 4 2/3 innings of work.
In game one, Gettysburg eliminated Ursinus with a 2-1 win thanks to hurler Shannon Kiry (Cinnaminson, NJ/ Cinnaminson), who pitched her third consecutive game only giving up one run off three hits.
Both team were scoreless until Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) hit an RBI double to left field, bringing in Gale for a 1-0 heading into the fifth inning.
Ursinus answered back and tied the game on Gina Salvi's home run, but Mastropaolo hit a line drive to right field to bring in Pabst for the game-winning run in the fifth.
The Bullets wasted little time looking to revenge the 7-3 loss to Muhlenberg on Saturday as Gettysburg took an early 4-0 lead after one inning in game two.
Gale added one more in the bottom of the third off an RBI double from Sara Gutermuth (Flanders, NJ/Mount Olive) to make it 5-0.
The Mules would score their lone run in the sixth on Ibey's solo home run.
Kiry collected her second complete-game victory of the day, allowing one run on five hits while striking out one.
Gale went 8-for-15 (.533) with five runs scored, one double and one RBI while Pilarcik tallied seven hits, including three doubles and six RBIs over the weekend. Mastropaolo added five hits, five RBIs, five runs scored, one double and two home runs in five games.
