Mary Washington stops Gettysburg in season opener, 2-1

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman Bryan Hargrove scored his first collegiate goal in the 78th minute to break a 1-all tie and lift Mary Washington over Gettysburg 2-1 in non-conference men’s soccer action on Saturday.

With his squad playing a man down following a red card, Hargrove finished a pass from Roberto Morales to help the visitors capture their season opener and spoil the Bullet coaching debut of Gettysburg’s Devin O’Neill. Morales also netted the Eagles’ first goal of the match.

Senior captain Will Hohman (Landenberg, PA/St. Mark’s [DE]) scored the Bullets’ first goal of the 2003 campaign, knotting the contest at 1 off a cross-goal feed from David Pone (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown) early in the second half. Hohman and Chris Borcik (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) each fired off two of Gettysburg’s nine shots on the afternoon.

Morales put Mary Washington on the board in the 33rd minute, collecting the ball off a scramble at the 18, then blasting a turnaround shot into the right netting for a 1-0 lead.

That advantage held up until Pone and Hohman connected minutes into the second half. Playing in a steady downpour, Pone sent a long cross from the left sideline that Hohman ran onto and one-timed into the left corner for a 1-1 game at 52:15.

The Bullets maintained that momentum thanks to an Eagle red card in the 76th minute that gave the home squad a man advantage, but it was Mary Washington that came up with the winning strike.

Less than two minutes after the penalty, Morales collected another loose ball inside the Gettysburg box, this time feeding Hargrove. The freshman, one of three newcomers in the MWC starting lineup and 13 on the squad’s roster, finished into an open goal to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead at 77:17.

The Bullets could not come up with the equalizer in the closing minutes, managing only one shot after Hohman’s goal.

Liam Garland made four saves for Mary Washington while Gettysburg freshman John Ward (Elysbury, PA/Southern Columbia) made two stops in his collegiate debut.

The game also lifted the curtain on O’Neill’s tenure in Orange and Blue. The new Bullet mentor spent four seasons as the head coach at East Carolina University before succeeding current Gettysburg athletics director David Wright.

The Bullets return to action on Saturday at Eastern. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
