GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Junior Mike Leader
(Hershey, PA/Hershey) netted the game-winning goal
in the 63rd minute to lead Gettysburg past Frostburg State
1-0 in men's soccer non-conference action on Wednesday.
Senior Will Hohman (Landenberg, PA/St.
Marks [DE]) recorded an assist and freshman John
Ward (Elysbury, PA/Southern Columbia) tallied two
saves for his first-collegiate shutout. This game marked the
Bullets (1-2) first win of the season and first win for head
coach Devin O'Neill.
Leader netted his first goal of the season
and contributed to the Gettysburg defense that held the Bobcats
(0-3) scoreless.
Kodjo Natiko posted a team-high
three of the six Frostburg shots while Tom Sadler
made three stops in the net.
After being awarded two corner kicks within
the first three minutes of the second half, the Bullets managed
to capitalize on their third opportunity 18 minutes later.
From the corner, Hohman served in a driven
ball to the top of the penalty stripe where Leader ended up
from his run in and with a one-touch left-footed shot he netted
the ball just past the left side of Sadler to make it 1-0
with 27:37 left in the game.
Despite the scoreless half, both teams came
away with several scoring opportunities.
Sadler made the diving save on Gettysburg's
first shot of the game by David Pone (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown),
who ripped the left-footed shot outside the 18 in the 27th
minute.
Natiko struck a direct kick with 13:31 left
in the first half nearly hitting the crossbar while Ward came
up with the ball on his second direct kick just outside the
box moments before halftime.
The Bobcats only managed one shot in the
second half, but the Bullets tallied five of their nine shots,
including Ryan Franks (Medford, NJ/Shawnee)
right-footed blast from the top of the box that was broken
up by Sadler.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday
at Goucher. Game time is 2 p.m.
