Goddu lifts Gettysburg to victory over Elizabethtown

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa.Gettysburg sophomore Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) netted a career-high two goals, both in the second half, to help the Bullets overcome a 1-0 first half deficit and defeat visiting Elizabethtown 2-1 in non-conference field hockey action on Wednesday.

Goddu’s pair of goals equals her offensive output from her rookie campaign of 2002.

Senior Jessy O’Neill (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Gwynedd Mercy Academy) recorded seven saves in goal for the Bullets (1-1).

On the other side, Lisa Marquette had two saves for the Blue Jays (1-4).

Trailing 1-0, Goddu took a pass senior Jocie Eberle (South Portland, ME/South Portland) in the 46th minute from the top of the arc. Goddu’s shot bounced off the keeper’s foot and found the back of the cage to knot the game at 1-all.

Less than eight minutes later, Goddu took a pass from senior Kate Hopkins (Oswego, NY/West Chester East [PA]) at the top of the circle. She dribbled in from there and netted her second goal to give the Bullets the 2-1 advantage.

O’Neill made three huge saves down the stretch to preserve the Gettysburg lead and help the Bullets pick up their initial win of the 2003 campaign. The first of those stops came with 12 minutes showing when Kate Gwilliam had a breakaway all alone down the left side looking for the equalizer. She would be denied, though, when O’Neill made the kick save.

Elizabethtown’s lone goal of the day came with just under nine minutes showing in the first half off a penalty corner. Kelly Miller made a double move past O’Neill to score unassisted and give the Blue Jays the 1-0 lead.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at No. 3 Rowan. Game time is 1 p.m.
