FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Kathleen McCormack scored the game-winner to lead Christopher Newport past Gettysburg 3-1 in the Mary Washington Classic on Saturday.
McCormack scored the game-winning goal nine minutes, 52 seconds into the second half to give the Captains (4-1) a 2-1 lead that would not relinquish. Paniz Asgari and Shelly Rusnak also scored in the winning effort.
Leah Hyde (Yardley, PA/Pennsbury) tallied her first goal of the season while Katie Simmons (Altamont, NY/Guiderland) made one save for the Bullets (2-2).
With the game tied at one heading into the second half, the Captains scored two unanswered goals for their fourth win of the season.
McCormack scored in the 55th minute to give Christopher Newport the 2-1 advantage, before Rusnak netted a goal in the 73rd minute to seal the victory.
Asgari found the twine first in the 11th minute, but Gettysburg answered back just one minute and 15 seconds later to knot the game at one.
Hyde scored her first goal of the season unassisted in the 13th minute, but that would be the only goal the Bullets came away with despite outshooting the Captains 8-4.
Gettysburg returns to action on Sunday against Mary Washington at the Mary Washington Classic. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
