Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va.Conrad Singh caught a pair of touchdown passes and CW Clemmons also scored twice to lead 18th-ranked Hampden-Sydney over Gettysburg 31-13 in non-conference football action on Saturday.

Making his second collegiate start, sophomore quarterback J.D. Ricca threw for 204 of his 266 passing yards and both touchdown strikes in the decisive first half as the Tigers (2-0) posted their sixth consecutive victory over the Bullets (1-1). In addition to his two touchdowns, Clemmons finished with 15 carries for a team-high 97 yards.

Singh scored on Ricca passes of 63 and 19 yards, hauling in all eight of his catches in the first half for 141 yards.

Gettysburg fullback Mike Schwalb (Bernardsville, NJ/Pingry School) led Gettysburg with 17 carries for 100 yards and one touchdown in his first action of the 2003 season. The junior captain missed the Bullets’ season opener due to injury.

Quarterback Joe Gossweiler (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) completed 7 of 23 passes for 162 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown pass to Nick Nocar (Baltimore, MD/Gilman) that pulled Gettysburg within 21-13 late in the third quarter.

After a slow start by both offenses, Hampden-Sydney opened the scoring on its third possession of the day.

Ricca kept the drive alive with a 22-yard strike to Ben Dull on third-and-6, then found Singh on an 11-yard pass to the Gettysburg 13. Three plays later, Clemmons scored on a seven-yard run to put the Tigers up 7-0 with 5:09 left in the first quarter.

On the Bullets’ next possession, Schwalb ripped off runs of 20 and 11 on his first two carries of the season, but the visitors’ drive stalled at the Hampden-Sydney 37 following an unsuccessful fake punt.

Ricca needed one play to double the lead, halting the Gettysburg defense with a play-action fake and finding Singh long down the middle of the field for a 63-yard touchdown strike that made it 14-0 with 2:25 left in the first quarter.

The Bullets used the first of a number of big plays to answer with their first touchdown of the game. On first-and-10 from the Gettysburg 31, Gossweiler found Gentris Bryant (Wilmington, DE/Archmere Acad.) down the right sideline for a 46-yard completion to the Tiger 23. Three plays later, Schwalb scored from 10 yards out on the first play of the second quarter to pull the Bullets within 14-6.

Minutes later, Ricca marched Hampden-Sydney 80 yards on seven plays for his squad’s third touchdown, completing all six of his attempts on the drive. Ricca kept the march going with a 15-yard toss to Singh on third-and-7 from the Bullet 47, then connected with Singh on a 19-yard scoring toss two plays later to give the Tigers a 21-6 lead heading into halftime.

Gettysburg grabbed the momentum after the break, going 86 yards on four plays to pull within 21-13 late in the third quarter. On first-and-10 from the Bullet 41, Gossweiler lofted a pass down the left sideline for Nocar, who went the rest of the way for his fifth career touchdown against the Tigers.

A Hampden-Sydney fumble at the end of Tripp Murchison’s 33-yard reception gave Gettysburg the ball back at its own 46, but the ensuing drive stalled on the Tiger 39 and the Bullets were forced to punt.

Hampden-Sydney managed only 18 yards on its next possession, but Bo Wilkinson’s punt was mishandled at the Gettysburg 20 and recovered by Warren Poirier at the Bullet 16.

The Bullet defense kept the Tigers out of the end zone, but Alex Bland knocked through a 27-yard field goal to make it a two-possession game at 24-13 with 11:54 remaining.

Gettysburg was forced to punt on its next two possessions before Clemmons scored on a 16-yard run to cap a 4-play, 32-yard drive and set the final margin at 31-13 with 4:04 remaining.

The Bullets return to action on Saturday against Waynesburg. Game time is 1 p.m.
