Sophomores power Bullets to victory at Catholic

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C.The Gettysburg field hockey team made its opportunities count on Tuesday, and the Bullets tallied their largest offensive output of the young season to win at Catholic, 3-1.

Sophomore Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) continued to show that there would be no sophomore slump for her as she led all Bullets with three points. Her goal and assist on the day brings her season total to five goals and one assist for a team-high 11 points. Goddu also netted her second game-winning goal.

Stephanie Roselle scored Catholic’s (1-2) lone goal of the afternoon, unassisted.

Senior goalkeeper Jessy O’Neill (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Gwynedd Mercy) recorded six saves in her second win of the year, while Erin Swift made four stops for the Cardinals.

Roselle erased a 1-0 halftime deficit when she scored unassisted less than four minutes into the second half for Catholic.

Goddu broke the 1-all tie two minutes later when she redirected a long pass from senior Amy Ritter (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) over the keeper’s head for a 2-1 lead.

Gettysburg (2-2) extended the lead with 11:28 remaining. Off a restart at the top of the arc, junior Kelley Mishler (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) sent a ball in that classmate Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) collected. After drawing the keeper out, Lowe dumped the ball off to sophomore Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin), who netted the first goal of her collegiate career.

In a first half controlled mostly by the hosts, the Bullets made the most of an opportunity late in the opening stanza. Lowe sent a ball in from the right side to a waiting Goddu, who drew the Cardinal keeper out before passing off to the waiting stick of junior Kristen Held (Glenside, PA/Springfield Township) for a 1-0 lead. The goal was also the first of Held’s career at Gettysburg.

The Bullets open a five-game homestand when they host No. 11 Mary Washington on Thursday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
