Box Score
YORK, Pa. - Sophomore Brendan Cain
(Derwood, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) scored the game-winning
goal in the 108th minute to lead Gettysburg past York in double
overtime non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday.
Micheal Garea (Maplewood, NJ/Columbia)
and Andrew Maynard (Reading, PA/Exeter) tallied
their first goals of the season to help the Bullets (2-2)
hand the Spartans (4-1-1) their first loss of the season and
end their three-game shutout streak.
Scott McDowell netted his fifth
goal of the season while Chad Gensemer tallied
a goal and Mike Cook tallied five saves for
York.
After an intense battle for 108 minutes,
Cain tallied the game-winner with 2:48 left to go in the second
overtime to help Gettysburg capture their second victory of
the season.
Will Hohman's (Landenberg, PA/St. Marks
[DE]) soaring shot from the left was stopped by a
diving Cook who made the deflection and Cain struck the rebounded
ball into the lower right corner for his first-collegiate
goal.
On their first shot of the second half, York
tied it at 2-all. Ward came out of the goal to intercept a
cross from David Schultz and was beat by Gensemer,
who had the open goal at the 69:20 mark.
The Bullets were riding a 2-1 lead after
the first half thanks to Garea and Maynard.
Off a throw in, Ryan Aldridge (Colts
Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) used his head to flick the ball
over Cook before Garea headed the ball into the left side
of the net to knot the game at one.
With the play back and forth, the momentum
from the first goal continued and Gettysburg tallied their
second unanswered goal at the 42:54 mark of the first half.
Freshman Jeffrey Collmann's (Elverson,
PA/Twin Valley) cross found Maynard inside the six-yard
line to give the Bullets a 2-1 edge going in to the second
half.
The Spartans started the scoring when McDowell
had his first shot stopped by John Ward (Elysbury, PA/Southern
Columbia), but was there to get the rebound and put
it in the net on his second try.
Ward's six-save performance was a career-high
for the freshman, including just one in overtime when he stopped
Jeremy Klunk.
Despite being outshot 14-12, Gettysburg had
two goals called back because of a foul inside the box and
for offsides.
The Bullets return to action on Saturday
at Haverford. Game time is 2 p.m.
