CHESTER, Pa. Gettysburg
went 2-0 in pool play to advance to the championship match
in the Widener Classic on Saturday. In the title match,
the Bullets swept Nazareth (9-5) for the championship.
For her
efforts on the day, junior Jessica
Cortese (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) was
named the tournaments most valuable player, while
classmate Nicole Barr (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) was
named to the all-tournament team.
Cortese led the way offensively in the championship match with
12 kills and two service aces. Barr added 10 kills, while
sophomore Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) had 35 assists. Senior Michelle Dorsch (Frederick, MD/Governor Thomas
Johnson) steadied the defense with 17 digs, and
sophomore Erica Rau (Oakland
Park, FL/Pine Crest)
had two blocks.
Gettysburg (10-5) opened the championship match with a 30-25 win
in game one before winning games two and three by identical
30-26 scores to defeat the Golden Flyers.
In its first
match of the day en route to the title run, Gettysburg
swept Centennial Conference-foe Ursinus.
Leading
the way in that match for the Bullets was sophomore Joan
Nagel (North Wales, PA/North
Penn) with
nine kills and four digs. Smith added 16 assists, while
Cortese contributed offensively
with seven kills. Freshman Hillary
Prutzman (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) continued her strong serving with four aces, and sophomore
Jayme Massey (Springfield, PA/Merion Mercy Academy) had three total blocks.
Gettysburg cruised in game one winning 30-10. The Bears (3-5) gained
strength as the match went on, but the Bullets still managed
the sweep winning games two and three 30-20 and 30-22, respectively.
In the second
Bullet match of the day, the hosts took Gettysburg
four games before the Orange & Blue pulled out their
largest win of the match at 30-15 to win 3-1.
Leading
Gettysburg in that match was Barr with 17 kills. Cortese added 14 kills, while Smith had a season-high 51 assists.
Dorsch had three service aces
and nine digs. Freshman Steph Vial (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic)
added nine digs, while Prutzman
added another three blocks.
The Bullets
won game one of the match 30-21. Gettysburg took game two 30-23 before the Pioneers (2-11) won game
three by an identical score. Gettysburg bounced right back in game four to take the match and
advance to the championship match.
The Bullets
return to next Saturday at the Catholic Invitational. Gettysburg opens play with Widener at 10 a.m.
