Gettysburg shuts down Washington & Jefferson

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa.How do you follow up your biggest offensive output of the season? If you’re the Gettysburg field hockey team, you better it and once again put up your largest offensive numbers of the season.

That’s exactly what happened Saturday afternoon on Memorial Field when the Bullets (3-2) met up with Washington & Jefferson (0-7). Gettysburg controlled play from the opening whistle and never looked back, shutting out the Presidents, 4-0. The Bullets did not even allow W&J a shot, holding a 31-0 advantage in that category.

Junior Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) led the Orange & Blue with two goals, including the game-winner.

Classmate Quinn Dougherty (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) picked up her initial win of the season in goal, playing 45 minutes, while freshman Abby Treworgy (Mt. Airy, MD/South Carroll) saw her first action between the pipes in a Gettysburg uniform, playing the last 25 minutes of the game.

Freshman goalkeeper Heather Browne made 16 saves for the Presidents.

Gettysburg’s domination started less than 30 seconds into the game, when sophomore Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) recorded the game’s first shot. Before eight minutes had elapsed, the Bullets held a 4-0 shot advantage and a 1-0 lead. Lowe made a move around a defender and found the back of the cage for her first goal on the day.

After a barrage of shots going wide for the Bullets over the next 14 minutes, Lowe collected a loose ball in front of the net, and scored her second of the game to gave Gettysburg a 2-0 lead.

Three minutes later, Lowe came within inches of the natural hat trick, but a huge stop by Browne kept it a 2-0 game.

With just about six minutes to play in the opening stanza, the Bullets set up for their ninth corner of the game. Junior Kelley Mishler (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) sent the ball across to senior Amy Ritter (Medford, NJ/Shawnee), who netted her first goal of the season for a 3-0 game. The assist for Mishler was her first point of 2003.

Gettysburg continued to dominate the second half but could not find the back of the cage to extend its lead until the 58th minute. Sophomore Becky Latta (West Chester, PA/Henderson) shot the ball from the top-left of the arc, but Browne made a kick save to prevent the goal. However, junior Cassidy Zappacosta (Monkton, MD/Maryvale Prep) was waiting on the other side to collect the rebound, which she did and found put it by the goalie for her first goal of the season and the fourth and final Bullets’ goal.

The Bullets return to action on Tuesday at home against No. 1 Messiah. Game time is 4 p.m.
