Borcik's lone goal lifts Gettysburg over Swarthmore, 1-0

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Junior Chris Borcik (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) netted the game-winning goal to lead Gettysburg past Swarthmore 1-0 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's soccer action on Saturday.

Borcik scored in the 16th minute for his third goal of the season to help the Bullets (5-2, 2-0 CC) win their 11th-straight game against the Garnet (2-7-1, 0-2 CC), including the last nine via shutout. With that goal, Borcik extends his scoring streak to three-straight games.

Senior Andrew Smith (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Twp.) tallied his first assist of the year while John Ward (Elysburg, PA/Southern Columbia) recorded six saves for his third shutout in his debut campaign.

Swarthmore's goalkeeper Nathan Shupe made five stops in the losing effort.

Gettysburg netted the lone goal early into the first half to remain undefeated in the conference and post their fifth-straight victory.

Borcik tallied his first game-winner when he headed the cross from Smith past Shupe and into the right corner of the goal.

The Bullets held the Garnet to only five shots while tallying nine shots in the first half and 11 in the second half.

David Pone (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown) tallied five shots on the day, including a shot that went over the crossbar in an one-on-one opportunity the 18th minute.

Freshman Jeffery Collmann (Elverson, PA/Twin Valley) hit the crossbar off a left-footed shot from 25 yards out in the 67th minute.

Swarthmore never backed down and tried to make the most of their opportunities, but came up short.

Ward saved Marty Griffith's left-footed shot on goal and his header off a corner kick in the 42nd & 43rd minute, respectively.

Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday against Messiah. Game time is 4 p.m.
