Gettysburg wins second straight tournament with 3-0 day at Catholic

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Gettysburg volleyball team put together another 3-0 day to win its second straight tournament title. On Saturday, the Bullets (13-5) defeated Widener, Randolph-Macon, and Catholic at the Guetle Invitational at Catholic University in their last weekend of competition before conference action begins.

Gettysburg opened the day with a 3-0 sweep of Widener (3-16) before picking up back-to-back 3-1 victories over Randolph-Macon and the hosts.

On the day, junior Jessica Cortese (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) recorded a team-high 63 kills, while sophomore Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) tallied 148 assists. Cortese was also named to the all-tournament team for her play.

In the opening match against the Pioneers, Cortese tallied 21 kills and seven digs to lead the way for Gettysburg. Classmate Nicole Barr (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) added 12 kills and a block solo, while Smith had 46 assists. Freshman Steph Vial (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) steadied the defense with 10 digs, while sophomore Erica Rau (Oakland Park, FL/Pine Crest) added a block solo.

The Bullets opened the day with a tightly contested game one against Widener , pulling out a 30-28 victory. Gettysburg cruised from there winning games two and three 30-20 and 30-21, respectively.

Against Randolph-Macon (11-3), Cortese recorded the first double-double by any Bullet this season with 15 kills and 16 digs. She also added three service aces, while freshman Hillary Prutzman (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) tallied a pair. Barr also added 15 kills, while Smith tallied 48 assists. Vial once again steadied the defense with 17 digs, while sophomore Jayme Massey (Springfield, PA/Merion Mercy Academy) added two block solos.

Gettysburg opened the match with a 30-22 victory in game one. The Yellow Jackets came back strong in game two, however, tying the match at 1-all with a hard-fought 31-29 win. The Bullets pulled it together and won games three and four 30-24 and 30-27, respectively.

In the final match of the day against the Cardinals (13-4), Cortese continued her strong play and recorded a career-high 27 kills. Smith also had a career match, recording a career-high 54 assists, bettering her total of 51 last weekend at Widener. Barr added 13 kills, while Smith and Massey tallied three aces apiece. Dorsch and Vial led the way defensively with 14 and 13 digs, respectively.

The match against the hosts had much the same feel as the one previous against Randolph-Macon. The Bullets cruised to victory in game one, winning 30-20 before Catholic knotted the match at 1-all with a 31-29 win in game two. Gettysburg won games three and four for the match win and the tournament title with 30-25 and 30-22 victories, respectively.

The Bullets return to action on Wednesday opening the conference schedule at Johns Hopkins. Match time is 7 p.m.
