Gettysburg blanks Swarthmore in conference opener

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa.The Gettysburg field hockey team continues to put up bigger and bigger numbers the farther into the 2003 season it goes. After netting just two goals in each of their first three games, the Bullets put up three at Catholic on Sept. 16. They followed that up with a 4-0 win over Washington & Jefferson last Saturday on Homecoming. After a week off, the Orange & Blue followed up the 4-0 performance with a 5-0 win in Saturday’s Centennial Conference (CC) opener against Swarthmore.

Gettysburg (4-2/1-0 CC) used three first half goals to post its second straight shutout and third consecutive victory over the visiting Garnet (3-5/0-1 CC) in a very windy day on Memorial Field.

Five different Bullets scored goals, and six different players registered a point, led by junior Kelley Mishler (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) with a goal and an assist. Her goal was also the game-winner as well as her first of the season.

Senior Jessy O’Neill (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Gwynedd-Mercy Academy) made three saves to pick up her third win of the season in as many attempts and her first shutout.

Freshmen goalkeepers Karen Lorang and Melissa LaVan split time in the cage for Swarthmore. Lorang allowed three goals and made six saves and picked up the loss, while LaVan allowed two goals in the second half.

The game started evenly played with both teams having opportunities to strike first. However, it was Mishler who got the hosts on the board just over nine minutes in. The Bullets set up for a penalty corner that Mishler took. She sent the ball to senior Lisa Giljam (Downingtown, PA/Villa Maria Academy) at the top of the arc, who passed the ball into classmate Kate Hopkins (Oswego, NY/West Chester East [PA]). Hopkins drew the goalie out and dumped the ball to the waiting stick of Mishler, who capitalized on the open cage for a 1-0 Gettysburg lead.

Sophomore Kristen Held (Glenside, PA/Springfield Township) made it a 2-0 game when she knocked in a rebound goal with just over 10 minutes to play in the opening stanza. Junior Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) took the original shot from the left side that Lorang stopped, but Held was there for the rebound.

Lowe got her own chance eight minutes later when she collected her own rebound and found the back of the cage for the 3-0 lead at the intermission.

Gettysburg controlled play in much of the second half. Eleven minutes in, the Bullets had a chance to make it 4-0, but a Mishler pass from the left side just missed Lowe’s stick to keep it a 3-0 game.

The hosts did make it 4-0 six minutes later, though. Mishler collected a loose ball on a scramble in front of net and found senior Carrie Brown (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) for the score.

At the 57:24 mark, sophomore Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) came within inches of making it 5-0, but the shot went just right of the cage. Gettysburg capitalized 31 seconds later, however, when classmate Becky Latta (West Chester, PA/Henderson) stole the ensuing free hit and dribbled in from the top of the circle uncontested for the final margin.

The Bullets return to action on Tuesday at home against Centennial Conference-foe Johns Hopkins. Game time is 4 p.m.
