Gettysburg shoots down Blue Jays

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa.Gettysburg senior Carrie Brown (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) scored 24 seconds into Tuesday’s Centennial Conference (CC) match-up with Johns Hopkins, and the Bullets never looked back en route to a 3-0 victory on Memorial Field.

With the win, the Bullets (5-2/2-0 CC) notched their third consecutive shutout, a feat not accomplished by Gettysburg field hockey since the 1998 season. That year, the Orange & Blue recorded consecutive shutouts against Messiah (1-0, 2ot), Muhlenberg (1-0), and Goucher (3-0). The shutout also marks the first time the Bullets have blanked the Blue Jays (2-5/0-1 CC) since the 1996 season, a 2-0 victory at Gettysburg.

The five wins matches last season’s win total for Gettysburg, while the fourth-straight victory is the first time the Bullets have achieved such a streak since 1999, when they won their first 13 games of the season and finished 17-4.

Brown led the offense with two goals for the third multi-goal game of her collegiate career.

Senior Jessy O’Neill (Lower Gwynedd, PA/Gwynedd-Mercy Academy) made four saves to improve to 4-0 on the year and post her second shutout of 2003.

Sophomore goalkeeper Meredith Shifman tallied eight saves between the pipes for Johns Hopkins in the first 64:26 of the game to pick up the loss, while freshman Dayna Eng played the last 5:34 for the Blue Jays.

The Bullets dominated from the opening whistle. Brown stole a Blue Jay pass and broke for the cage before a half-minute had elapsed in the contest. Her shot from the left side deflected off a defender’s stick and into the cage for the 1-0 lead.

Gettysburg continued to dominate for the next 10 minutes, but could not find the cage. The Bullets carried play for much of the remainder of the opening period and held a 9-1 advantage in shots entering the intermission.

Three and a half minutes into the second half, Gettysburg did get its chance to make it 2-0. Off a restart, sophomore Lauren Eby (Denver, PA/Garden Spot) sent a long pass in from the right side that junior Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) collected. Lowe sent the pass to the waiting stick of Brown, who found the backboard for her second of the game and fourth of the season.

Senior Lisa Giljam (Downingtown, PA/Villa Maria Academy) added an insurance goal at the 42:15 mark for the 3-0 final. Giljam controlled a pass from classmate Amy Ritter (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) at the top of the arc and slipped it through the defense and into the cage for her first goal of the season.

The Blue Jays had a flurry of offense and carried play for much of the last 27 minutes. After the Giljam goal, Johns Hopkins outshot the hosts 7-2, but the Bullet defense held strong to keep the shutout.

Gettysburg finished the contest with a 15-8 advantage in shots to remain perfect in conference play.

The Bullets return to action on Thursday at home against No. 3 Messiah. Game time is 4 p.m.
