GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Day one of the 18-team Battlefield Classic has come and gone, and six teams enter day two with a perfect 2-0 record, including host Gettysburg (3-1). The Bullets swept both of the matches Friday evening defeating Richard Stockton 30-10, 30-25, 30-19 before taking care of Hood 30-14, 30-10, 30-13.
Also having 2-0 days at the tournament were Moravian, Eastern, Scranton, Lycoming, and Mary Washington. The Bullets join Lycoming and Scranton in one pool, while Moravian, Eastern, and Mary Washington battle in the other top pool with the winners of each pool meeting in the championship match at 4 p.m.
In the first of Gettysburg's two matches, junior Jessica Cortese (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) recorded a team-high 12 kills while also adding eight digs and four blocks. Classmate Nicole Barr (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) led the defense with 10 digs and added seven kills. Sophomore setter Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) had 29 assists and 11 digs. Freshman Hillary Prutzman (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) led the team with seven service aces.
The Bullets took care of business against Richard Stockton (2-2) early, winning easily in game one, 30-10. The Ospreys fought hard to even the match score in game two but came up on the short end of a 30-25 decision. In game three, Gettysburg completed the sweep with a 30-19 victory.
In Gettysburg's second match of the night, the Bullets continued to roll not giving up more than 14 points in any game en route to a sweep of Hood (0-2). Prutzman led the offense with nine kills. Sophomore Margaret Hallahan (Huntington, PA/Huntington) added a team-high 17 assists, while Smith contributed with 16. Classmate Joan Nagel (North Wales, PA/North Penn) steadied the defense with six digs.
The hosts cruised in the nightcap of their two matches, giving up a total of 37 points to the Blazers to move into play on Saturday at 2-0.
In the other match of that bracket, Richard Stockton swept Hood 30-25, 30-21, 30-14 for a 1-1 first day to move into Pool CC, while the Blazers at 0-2 in the tournament will compete in Pool EE on Saturday.
Day two of the tournament kicks off at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the hosts taking on Lycoming. The Bullets also battle Scranton at 1 p.m.
