Eastern Mennonite controls Gettysburg for 4-2 win

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Eastern Mennonite’s Kristin Moyer netted a game-high three goals as the Royals controlled the majority of the game to defeat Gettysburg 4-2 in the Bullets’ season opener on Friday at Memorial Field.

Moyer’s hat trick gives her a team-high nine goals after just two games for the Royals.

Junior Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) and sophomore Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) both found the cage for the Bullets, while junior Quinn Dougherty (Wading River, NY/Shoreham-Wading River) made eight saves between the pipes for Gettysburg.

The Royals controlled the ball in Gettysburg’s end for much of the second half before breaking a 2-2 halftime deadlock. Moyer netted her second of the day when she dribbled in from the top of the circle and found the back of the cage with 24:08 left to play to put Eastern Mennonite (2-0) in front for good.

Seven more penalty corners in the next 14 minutes paid off when junior Molly Harrington pushed a pass in to Moyer from the top of the circle to put the game out of reach at 4-2.

Eastern Mennonite took its first of 15 penalty corners on the day just 35 second into the game. After a scramble in front of the cage, Kristie Souder controlled the ball and netted her only goal of the for a 1-0 lead just 53 seconds into play.

Gettysburg (0-1) converted a penalty corner of its own at the 24:14 mark when senior Carrie Brown (Hummelstown, PA/Hershey) centered a pass from the right side that Lowe slipped behind Royals goalie, Katie Moyer to knot the score at 1.

The Royals controlled the ball in their end for the next three minutes before Moyer collected a rebound and scored her first of three on the day.

With about 18 minutes to play in the opening stanza, senior Jocie Eberle (South Portland, ME/South Portland) slid a pass in from the right side between the defense that Goddu netted once again tie the game.

Eastern Mennonite had numerous other chances to retake the lead in the closing minutes of the first half, but Dougherty came up big for the Bullets making three saves to keep it a 2-2 game.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at home against Elizabethtown. Game time is 4 p.m.
