Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Becky Richmond knocked down five 3-pointers en route to a team-high 17 points, helping Muhlenberg down Gettysburg 99-82 in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s basketball action on Saturday.

Gwen Doyle added 12 points while Jill Friedman also hit double digits with 10 for the Mules, who entered the game as the highest scoring women’s program across all three NCAA divisions (94.2 ppg) and lived up to their average. Muhlenberg’s mass-substituting, press-and-shoot attack hoisted 91 shots while forcing 37 Bullet turnovers.

Gettysburg’s offense responded to the up-tempo challenge for most of the afternoon, producing five double-digit scorers for the third time in the last four games. Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew’s [DE]) scored 20 points along with a game-high 15 rebounds and a career-high six blocks while Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country School) also scored 20 and pulled down 13 boards for her seventh double-double of the season.

Dana Bear (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic) cruised past the 1,100-career point mark with 18 points while Emily Falk (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) chipped in with 12. Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) finished with 10 points for the Bullets (4-9, 1-5 CC).

Having overcome a six-point first-half deficit, the Mules (10-0, 5-0 CC) never trailed after Richmond nailed a 3-pointer to make it 54-52 with 13:44 left and went ahead to stay at 55-54 seconds later on a free throw from Susan Marchiano.

A Ross layup cut the lead to 64-63 with 8:16 left remaining before Muhlenberg used a 19-6 run over the next 3 minutes, 13 seconds to seal the victory. Richmond started the decisive stretch with a pair of free throws and drilled another trey to make it 71-65. Lindsay Tis converted a 3-point play and Kristen Piscadlo drained a 3-pointer to push the lead into double digits for the first time at 77-65 with 6:17 left.

Stephanie Coluccini’s jumper at the 5:03 mark capped the run and gave the Mules an 83-69 lead.

Gettysburg battled back to within 10 on four occasions, but could get no closer.

The Bullets found themselves in holes of 9-2 and 16-8 in the early minutes, before adjusting to Muhlenberg’s hectic style. Bear knotted the game at 28 with a 3-pointer, then gave Gettysburg its first lead since the opening basket at 32-31 with 7:35 left in the half.

Doyle answered with a 3-pointer and free throw to restore the Mules’ lead, but the Bullets responded with a 10-1 run to take their largest lead of the contest at 42-36. Bengel and Reilly each chipped in with four points during the stretch.

Reilly’s layup with 4:11 left, however, was Gettysburg’s final field goal of the half. Richmond and Jill Friedman keyed an 8-1 burst that gave the visitors a 44-43 lead at the break.

In addition to her 12-point night, Falk finished with a career-high seven assists in the loss.

Meghan Courtney led Muhlenberg with 10 rebounds. Richmond and Tis added eight boards apiece.

The Bullets return to action on Tuesday at Washington (Md.). Game time is 6 p.m.
