Washington snaps series losing streak with 77-68 win over Gettysburg

Box Score

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Kyle Stem led four players in double figures with a career-high 31 points as Washington (Md.) used a 53-point second half to defeat Gettysburg 77-68 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action on Tuesday.

Stem hit 8 of 11 shots from the floor – including a 4-for-7 showing from 3-point range – and also went 11-for-12 from the free-throw line to help the Shoremen (4-8, 1-4 CC) post their first CC victory of the season and snap a six-game losing streak to the Bullets (6-6, 2-3 CC). Washington’s last victory in the series before Tuesday was a 74-65 decision during the 1996-97 campaign.

Jonathan Webb added a double-double for the Shoremen with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) tallied a team-high 23 points and six assists for Gettysburg while Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) added a season-high 19 points. Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) also reached double digits with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Entering the night, Washington hadn’t tasted victory against the Bullets in nearly seven years and hadn’t downed Gettysburg at the Cain Center in nearly a decade. A first-half rally and a second half highlighted by 11-for-19 shooting from 3-point range ended the Shoremen’s drought.

Down 30-24 at halftime, Washington used a 3-pointer from David Horvath, a four-point play by Dustin Abbate and an Andrew Gentile jumper to take a 35-34 lead with 17:27 left. Glaser nailed a 3-pointer on the Bullets’ next trip to re-take the lead, but the Shoremen rained down four more 3-pointers in a span of 2 minutes, 51 seconds to push the lead to 47-39.

Washington’s advantage increased to 51-41 with 12:59 remaining before Gettysburg responded with a 14-2 run to take its final lead of the game at 55-53 with 6:33 to play. Jakobe tied the game at 53 with a layup before Oloruntoba put the Bullets ahead with a layup of his own.

The lead, however, didn’t survive the Shoremen’s next possession. Gentile drained a 3-pointer off a Stem assist to put the hosts ahead to stay with 6:19 left and Abbate followed with the last of his four treys to make it 59-55.

Gettysburg pulled within one on three occasions down the stretch, the final time coming after a Todd Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal) layup made it 64-63 with 2:02 remaining.

Stem and Webb, however, knocked down consecutive 3-pointers around a missed Bullet three to push the lead to 70-63 with 55 ticks left. Stem then drained six straight free throws in final moments to seal the win.

Despite a much lower scoring output, the game’s first half also featured big runs by both teams.

Five points from Jakobe and four apiece from both Glaser and Oloruntoba staked Gettysburg to an early 15-6 lead. The visitors led by as many as 13 when Oloruntoba hit a fourth-chance put-back to make it 24-11 with 7:46 left in the half.

With Stem and Abbate draining their team’s only two 3-pointers of the half, Washington went on a 13-1 run to pull within 25-24 before the Bullets tallied the final five points of the half.

Abbate finished with 16 points while Gentile had 10 in the winning effort.

Oloruntoba hit 8 of 13 shots on the night, but the rest of the Gettysburg squad went just 18-for-48 (38 percent) from the field.
The Bullets return to action on Friday at home against Haverford. Game time is 8 p.m.
