Gettysburg opens back-to-back weekend with 72-53 win over Haverford

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Todd Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal) led four players in double figures with a season-high 13 points as Gettysburg connected on 59 percent of its shots and downed Haverford 72-53 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action on Friday.

Brady hit 5 of 6 shots and also added two assists and three steals in 18 minutes off the bench, helping the Bullets (7-6, 3-3 CC) post their fifth straight win against the Fords (4-8, 2-4 CC) and 10th victory in 11 all-time conference meetings between the teams.

Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) added 11 points for Gettysburg while David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) and Reggie Davis (Longwood, FL/William Penn Charter [PA]) chipped in with 10 apiece. Glaser put together another strong all-around performance with six rebounds, a team-best five assists and three steals. Davis’ 10 points tied a career high, set early in the 2002-03 season.

Jeremy Bass posted team highs with 15 points and seven rebounds for Haverford while teammate Mark Gabriel finished with 14 points. The Fords managed only 17 points on 7-of-25 shooting (28 percent) in the first half against the CC’s top scoring defense.

One of 10 teams playing the first of back-to-back weekend conference games for the first time in the Centennial’s 11-year history, the Bullets unleashed a balanced scoring attack and another solid defensive outing to square their conference record at 3-3.

Tied for third among all CC players in 3-pointers per game, Jakobe struck twice from behind the arc in the opening 1:16, helping Gettysburg build a quick 8-0 lead it would not relinquish the rest of the night.

A jumper from Bass pulled Haverford within 14-10 before the Bullets scored 17 of the game’s next 21 points to take a commanding 31-14 lead with 2:57 left before halftime.

Jakobe started the run with his third triple of the half and a trey from Chris Pombar (Glen Head, NY/North Shore) pushed the lead into double digits for the first time at 20-10. Glaser made it 27-14 with his only 3-pointer of the game and Brady followed with a layup at the 4:58 mark to force a Ford timeout.

Single free throws from Pombar and Kyle McGlensey (West Chester, PA/East) gave the hosts a 17-point advantage. Haverford crept within 14 briefly when Bass converted a 3-point play, but Davis hit driving layups on Gettysburg’s final two possessions of the half for a 37-17 lead.

The Fords pulled within 45-32 at the 11:19 mark of the second half on a Bass free throw, but Glaser assisted layups by Davis and Jakobe, then scored in the paint to restore the Bullets’ momentum and make it 51-34 with 10:02 left.

A Gabriel put-back cut the deficit to 53-39, but five points from Glaser and four from Brady ignited an 11-0 run that pushed the lead to 25 and sent Gettysburg on its way to the win.

Erik Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) pulled down a team-high seven rebounds for the Bullets, who shot 13-for-19 (68 percent) from the floor in the second half.

Jason Polykoff handed out a team-best five assists for the Fords. CC assists leader Johnny Elefterakis (6.55 apg) was held to two assists in 29 minutes.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at home against Swarthmore. Game time is 4 p.m.
