Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa.Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country School) recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds to help Gettysburg defeat Haverford 83-41 in Centennial Conference (CC) women’s basketball action on Friday.

Senior captain Dana Bear (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic) led the Bullets (6-9, 3-5 CC) with 16 points while Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew’s [DE]) chipped in her sixth double-digit scoring performance in the last seven games with 12.

Katie Crowley led the Fords (1-10, 0-5 CC) with a game-high 17 points, largely on 11-for-15 shooting from the charity stripe.

Both teams opened an historic weekend with teams around the CC competing in the conference’s first-ever weekend of back-to-back competition. Gettysburg hosts Swarthmore on Saturday while Haverford travels to Dickinson to conclude the pair of games.

In Friday’s opener, the Bullets took an early 7-0 lead in the first 1 minute, 22 seconds of the contest and never looked back en route to their third win in the last four games, all conference games. Bear opened the contest with a layup, and Bengel capped the run with her second 3-pointer of the season.

Caitie Kimura momentarily halted the spurt with a trey of her own at the 17:49 mark, but Gettysburg regained control with a 14-3 over the next six and a half minutes to open a 21-6 advantage.

A Crowley layup snapped the run and pulled the Fords to within 13 at 21-8, but Haverford could get no closer the rest of the way. Bear and Ross combined for 16 of the Bullets’ final 28 points of the opening stanza to open a 49-17 halftime edge.

Gettysburg pushed the lead to as many as 44 on three different occasions in the second half, the last coming at 78-34 with 6:14 to play when freshman Hillary Prutzman (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) hit her only field goal of the second half. She also pulled down a career-best nine rebounds – seven in the second half – and set a new career high with three steals.

Claudia Barston (Darien, CT/Darien) and Cat Arnold (Huntington, VT/Mt. Mansfield Union) tallied career highs in rebounding on the night with eight and four, respectively. Barston also notched a new best in scoring with five points.

Bear and Emily Falk (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) combined for six of the Bullets’ eight 3-pointers, one off the team’s season high. The duo joined forces for five of Gettysburg’s seven treys in the opening 20 minutes, a season best for one half.

Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) rounded out the Bullets’ double-digit scorers with 10 points. Gettysburg has had at least four players go for double figures seven times this season.

Gettysburg tips off against Swarthmore – who opened the weekend at Bryn Mawr on Friday – at 2 p.m.
