Glaser enjoys career night as Bullets rally to defeat Ursinus, 81-73; Stanton stays on Division III-leading average with 30 points

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) posted career highs with 31 points and 12 rebounds as Gettysburg rallied from nine points down in the final seven minutes to defeat Ursinus 81-73 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action on Wednesday.

Glaser, who went 8-for-13 from the floor and a career-best 14-for-18 from the free-throw line, scored 11 of his points during a 19-4 second-half run that turned a 66-57 deficit into a 76-70 lead with 1:38 remaining. The junior’s 31-point outing was the Bullets’ first 30-point showing since Curtis McNeil tallied 35 against Franklin & Marshall on Jan. 12, 2002.

Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) added 16 of his season-high 21 points in the second half to help Gettysburg (8-7, 4-4 CC) improve to 6-2 at Bream Gym in 2003-04 and down the Bears (9-6, 5-3 CC) for the sixth time in the last seven meetings between the teams.

Ursinus senior Dennis Stanton, who entered the evening as the leading scorer in Division III, matched his scoring average with 30 points on 10-of-21 shooting, knocking down all five of his 3-pointers and 22 points after halftime. Joe Scholz added 12 points and a team-best nine rebounds for the Bears, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.

On a wild night in which both teams led by double digits, the Bullets survived Stanton and Co.’s best punch to claim a key conference victory.

Held to eight points and no 3-pointers as the Bears fell behind 38-33 at halftime, Stanton erupted after the break, hitting five treys – the final four coming in a span of 1 minute, 46 seconds – to key lightning-quick 19-3 run that turned a 46-40 deficit into a 59-49 lead with 11:05 left.

A conventional 3-point play by Stanton made it 66-57 with 7:03 remaining before Gettysburg responded.

Chris Pombar (Glen Head, NY/North Shore) zipped a pass to Glaser for an easy layup, then scored his only three points of the game on a 3-pointer to pull the Bullets within 66-62. Stanton converted two free throws after a tough drive to the hoop on Ursinus’ next trip, but Glaser hit two charity tosses of his own, then was fouled while putting back a missed 3-pointer and hit the free throw to make it 68-67 with 5:04 left.

Brian McEvily’s steal-and-layup ended a nearly two minute scoring drought on both sides and made it 70-67. Oloruntoba, however, drained a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession to tie the game, then put Gettysburg ahead to stay 72-70 with a driving layup as the shot clock wound down.

The Bullets got the ball back courtesy of a Bear turnover and Glaser was fouled after another of his five offensive rebounds, a play that also resulted in an Ursinus technical foul and four free throws. Glaser drained all four to extend the lead to 76-70 with 1:38 left.

A Scholz free throw and a layup by Naquan Williams pulled the Bears within 76-73 with one minute to play, but Gettysburg again ran the shot clock down to near expiration before Glaser drained a 3-pointer from the top of the arc to seal the win.

Ursinus had an opportunity to cut into the deficit, but Stanton missed twice from inside the 3-point line before Glaser closed the scoring with two more free throws in the game’s final four seconds.

The Bullets charged out of the gate with a 19-4 lead in the first six minutes before Bear reserve Bret Jenkins did his best Stanton imitation with three treys in a span of 3:41 to cut the lead to 19-15. A free throw by Erik Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) pushed the Gettysburg lead back to nine at 28-19 with 5:21 left in the half. Stanton’s layup in the final seconds made it 38-33 in favor of the home squad at the break.

Reggie Davis (Longwood, FL/William Penn Charter [PA]) sparked the Bullets’ strong start with nine of his career-high 11 points in the opening half. Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) managed only three points, but provided Gettysburg’s defensive spark with strong man-to-man coverage on Stanton for most of the duo’s 36 minutes on the floor together.

The Bullets shot better from the field (54 percent) than the free-throw line (53 percent) on the night, but were able to cash in a 34-9 edge in free-throw attempts.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at McDaniel. Game time is 2 p.m.
