Glaser, defense lift Gettysburg over McDaniel, 60-42; Bullets hold Green Terror to 25-percent shooting performance

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. - David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) scored a game-high 17 points and Gettysburg held McDaniel to 25-percent shooting from the floor in a 60-42 Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball victory on Saturday.

Despite being limited to 24 minutes due to foul trouble, Glaser managed to hit 8 of 11 shots, lifting the Bullets (9-7, 5-4 CC) to a season sweep of the Green Terror (5-11, 2-7 CC) and their eighth consecutive victory in the series. Glaser also surpassed the 900-career point mark on the afternoon, finishing the game with 910 to put himself 22 points away from the program’s all-time top 20.

Gettysburg’s Todd Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal) hit all four of his shots from the floor and 4 of 5 free throws to finish with 12 points, one short of his season high.

Kyle O’Connor, who keyed McDaniel’s overtime upset of Johns Hopkins on Wednesday, led the Green Terror with 16 points, but connected on only 3 of 14 shots from the floor and 2 of 8 from behind the 3-point line. Jemar Daniel also reached double digits with 10 points for the home team, which shot just 4-for-23 from the floor in the first half and were out-rebounded 45-26 on the afternoon.

Battling through an ugly first half in which the two teams combined for 25 personal fouls, 23 turnovers and misses on all 11 3-point attempts, the Bullets did enough to stake themselves to a 10-point halftime lead.

Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) scored on a backdoor layup and converted two free throws to give Gettysburg the lead for good at 4-2 in the opening minutes. Two layups and a jumper from Glaser pushed the advantage to 10-4 and Brady converted the first of two 3-point plays to make it 15-6 with 9:06 left in the half.

Five points from Sam Anstead pulled McDaniel within 17-11, but Brady again scored on a tough drive to the basket, Reggie Davis (Longwood, FL/William Penn Charter [PA]) hit one of two free throws and Erik Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) scored in close to put the Bullets ahead 22-11.

O’Connor went 6-for-6 from the free-throw line down the stretch to keep the Green Terror within range despite no field goals in the final 6:35 of the half. Chris Pombar’s (Glen Head, NY/North Shore) backdoor layup and Davis’ breakaway finish helped Gettysburg take a 28-18 lead into the locker room.

McDaniel cut the deficit to single digits on only one occasion in the second half - on an O’Conner 3-pointer with 14:13 left in the game - but the Green Terror went without a field goal for the next 4 minutes, 31 seconds. Kyle Jakobe’s (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) second 3-pointer of the half sparked a quick 8-0 burst that pushed the lead to 45-28 with 10:28 left and two Brady free throws made it 49-31.

Seven points in 39 seconds capped by a Daniel dunk cut the lead to 49-38, but Glaser hit back-to-back jumpers off a Bullet timeout to key a 9-0 spurt that sealed the victory.

Oloruntoba finished with eight points and a game-high nine rebounds on the day while Jakobe chipped in with eight points and seven boards.

McDaniel’s 25-percent shooting was the season low for a Gettysburg opponent in 2003-04. The Bullets also posted their first back-to-back wins in January while enjoying a season-best plus-19 rebounding margin.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at home against Dickinson. Game time is 8 p.m.
