Gettysburg holds on for 61-57 win over Dickinson; Falk posts first career double-double

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Emily Falk (Boiling Springs, PA/Boiling Springs) posted her first double-double, tying a season best with 13 points and adding a career-high 10 rebounds to propel Gettysburg to a 61-57 Centennial Conference (CC) victory over visiting Dickinson in women’s basketball on Wednesday evening.

Falk had all 10 of her rebounds on the defensive end of the floor and scored five of the Bullets' final 11 points to break a 50-all tie while playing all 40 minutes. Jen Bengel (Timonium, MD/Roland Park Country School) netted a team-high 14 points, 10 after the intermission, for Gettysburg (8-10, 5-6 CC) and Kathryn Reilly (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) also reached double figures with 12 points.

Piper Etess tallied her second straight double-double and led all scorers with 17 points and a game-high 11 boards for the Red Devils (8-6, 5-4 CC), who dropped their third straight conference game.

Jess Howard rattled home the first 3-pointer of the game for either team with 5:22 to play to spark an 8-0 Dickinson run in 56 seconds to tie the contest at 50, marking the tenth and final tie.

A Bengel layup at 4:12 gave the hosts the lead for good. After Megan ShelleyDickinson’s leading scorer, who was held to six points – made 1 of 2 free throws to cut the lead in half, Falk hit the Bullets’ only trey of the game to push the lead back to four.

Allyson Teatom hit her final two of 15 points with 43 seconds left to cut the lead to 58-57. Dana Bear (Lansdale, PA/Lansdale Catholic) and Jamie Marshall (Pottsville, PA/Nativity B.V.M.) connected on three of their four free throws down the stretch to seal the win and set the final margin.

Gettysburg opened a 6-2 lead in the game’s first three minutes, including four by Elizabeth Ross (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew’s [DE]), who was limited to 15 minutes due to foul trouble and finished with seven points.

The Red Devils rode four points from Teatom to counter and knot the contest at 10. Falk’s first jumper of the game gave the Bullets the lead back at 12-10. Bengel stretched the hosts’ lead back to four with a jumper of her own.

Etess sparked an 11-2 run over the next three and a half minutes with five points to give Dickinson a 21-16 lead. Back-to-back buckets by Falk and Reilly pulled Gettysburg to 21-20 with 8:26 to play in the opening stanza.

Five free throws by Etess and a bucket from Howard allowed the Red Devils to open their largest lead of the game at 28-20. Bear hit two free throws of her own to snap a five-minute scoring drought by the Bullets en route to a 29-25 halftime deficit.

Jumpers by Bengel and Reilly to open the second half tied the game at 29-all with 17:26 to play. Etess tied the game at 39, connecting on two of her nine free throws. Reilly and Tarbell combined for seven points sparked an 11-3 run that gave the Bullets their biggest lead at 50-42 with 5:44 to play.

Bengel and Reilly finished with eight rebounds apiece for Gettysburg. Reilly also set a career high in blocked shots with four.

The Bullets returns to action on Saturday at Haverford. Game time is 2 p.m.
