SCRANTON, Pa. – Chris Zimmerman
scored 12 of his team-high 15 points in the decisive second
half as Susquehanna rallied to defeat Gettysburg 66-57 in
the first round of the University of Scranton Radisson Invitational
on Saturday.
Dan Rathmell added 13 points
and a game-high nine rebounds for the Crusaders, who won the
first meeting between the two teams since the 1990-91 season.
Phil Sander added eight points and eight boards,
helping Susquehanna (7-2) post a 46-25 advantage on the glass,
including a 2-to-1 edge in defensive rebounds.
David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern
Prep) poured in a game-high 23 points for the Bullets,
who were playing for the first time since losing back-to-back
games at nationally ranked Franklin & Marshall and Division
I Navy by a combined three points in mid-December. Kyle
Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) also hit
double digits with 13 points.
With the loss, Gettysburg will face host
Scranton in the tournament’s consolation game on Sunday at
1 p.m. The Royals fell to Clark (Mass.) 94-84 in overtime.
Despite 41 missed shots and a season-low
minus-21 rebounding deficit, the Bullets (4-4) rallied for
a second-half lead before dropping their third straight game.
Trailing 34-27 in the opening minutes
of the second half, Gettysburg unleashed a 15-4 run to take
a four-point lead with 12:39 remaining.
Todd Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal)
and Reggie Davis (Longwood, FL/William Penn Charter
[PA]) connected on consecutive 3-pointers before Brady
knotted the game at 36 with another trey. Glaser converted
back-to-back layups to give the visitors their first lead
at 40-38 and Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor
Roosevelt) followed with a layup for a four-point
cushion.
James Barile answered with
a layup for the Crusaders, sparking an 16-4 run that put Susquehanna
ahead to stay. Sander knotted the contest at 42 before Barile
drilled his lone 3-pointer of the day and Walter Fowler
converted 1-of-2 free throws to make it 46-42 with 9:41 left.
Glaser hit a layup to draw the visitors within two, but it
would be the Bullets’ only field goal over a nearly nine-minute
stretch.
Rathmell converted a 4-point play before
buckets by Zimmerman and Sander pushed the lead to 54-46 with
5:37 to play.
Jakobe cut the deficit to three with five
straight points and Glaser kept Gettysburg within 56-53 with
two free throws at the 1:55 mark, but the Crusaders closed
the game on a 10-4 run.
The two teams played to a 19-all stalemate
through the contest’s first 10 minutes, before Susquehanna
used a 10-4 streak to take a seven-point lead into the locker
room.
Oloruntoba finished with a career-high
six assists to go along with six rebounds and three steals.
Glaser added seven boards to go with his second 20-point effort
of the season.
Bubba Mills added eight
points and seven rebounds for the Crusaders.
