Glaser leads Gettysburg to come-from-behind victory at Haverford, 63-56

Box Score

HAVERFORD, Pa.David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) scored a game-high 25 points and added nine rebounds as Gettysburg rallied from an eight-point halftime deficit to defeat Haverford 63-56 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action on Saturday.

Glaser went 8-for-16 from the floor for the afternoon, putting the Bullets (11-7, 7-4 CC) ahead to stay on his only 3-pointer of the game with 8:14 remaining. Reggie Davis (Longwood, FL/William Penn Charter [PA]) added eight of his career-high 12 points including a pair of key 3-pointers, in the second half.

Todd Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal) also keyed the second-half rally scoring all eight of his points after the break to help Gettysburg improve to 16-1 all-time against the Fords (6-11, 4-7 CC).

The win, combined with Swarthmore’s 97-54 loss to Franklin & Marshall on Saturday, gives the Bullets a two-game lead for the CC’s fourth and final playoff spot.

Jeremy Bass led three Haverford players in double digits with 17 points. Mark Gabriel tallied 13 points and nine rebounds while Matt Stein chipped in with 10 points and nine boards before fouling out with 49 seconds left.

Trailing by as many as 14 points in the first half, the Bullets got clutch performances from a number of veterans to capture a crucial conference road victory.

Gettysburg managed only one field goal in the game’s first 12 minutes, 27 seconds, falling into a 26-12 hole when Jason Polykoff nailed a 3-pointer with 4:38 left in the half.

Glaser started the comeback with a baseline layup and a 3-point play on consecutive trips, helping the Bullets cut the deficit to 32-24 by halftime.

Bass hit 1 of 2 free throws to open the half, but Gettysburg reeled off the next 10 points to take its first lead since the opening minutes at 34-33. Davis started the burst with a 3-pointer from the top of the key and Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) punctuated the run with a breakaway dunk at 15:49.

Following a Fords timeout, Gabriel hit a short jumper to restore the Haverford lead and the hosts built their advantage to 41-36 on a Stein three-point play and three made free throws.

A Davis 3-pointer with the shot clock running out started an 11-1 run that put the Bullets ahead to stay. Brady followed Davis’ triple with one of his own to knot the game at 42 and Glaser stuck from behind the arc on Gettysburg’s next trip for a 45-42 lead.

Kyle McGlensey (West Chester, PA/East) finished a tough cutting layup off a baseline feed from Glaser to cap the run.

Haverford rallied to within three points on three occasions down the stretch – twice courtesy of thee-point plays by Gabriel – but the Bullets had the answer each time. Chris Pombar (Glen Head, NY/North Shore) converted a backdoor layup to make it 52-47, Glaser fed Brady for another baseline layup for a 56-51 lead and Gettysburg hit 7 of 10 free throws in the final 49 seconds to clinch the win.

With his 25-point performance, Glaser moved into 20th place on the program’s all-time scoring list with 955 career points. The junior also handed out a team-high four assists.

The Bullets return to action on Wednesday at home against Franklin & Marshall. Game time is 8 p.m.
