Bullets spread the wealth in 84-60 win at Scranton; McGlensey leads four in double figures with 14

Box Score

SCRANTON, Pa. – Kyle McGlensey (West Chester, PA/West Chester East) led four players in double figures with a career-high 14 points as Gettysburg raced to a 25-point halftime lead and cruised past Scranton 84-60 in the consolation game of the Radisson Invitational on Sunday.

Making his second collegiate start, McGlensey went 5-of-6 from the floor and hit two of three 3-point attempts, topping his previous single-game best of 11 points and helping the Bullets (5-4) snap a three-game losing streak. Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) added 13 points and a season-high eight rebounds for Gettysburg, which shot 66 percent from the floor in the first half and led by as many as 35 points.

Matt Whelan (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield/Worcester Acad. [MA]) topped his point total from the previous six games with a career-high 12 points while Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) also hit double digits with 10 in the winning effort. Jakobe earned all-tournament honors after scoring 13 points in a 66-57 opening-round loss to Susquehanna on Saturday.

Scranton’s Matthew Snyder led all scorers with 26 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Michael Riccobono added eight points and seven assists for the Royals (1-8).

Unusual stat lines abounded as the Bullets hit 19 of 29 shots to build an insurmountable 25-point halftime lead in its first meeting with Scranton in 11 seasons.

With the game only half over, McGlensey and Whelan had already tied career scoring highs with 11 and 10 points, respectively, while leading scorer David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) had dished out six of his career-high seven assists, but taken no shots in nine minutes of action.

The Royals jumped to a quick 6-0 lead in the game’s opening 1:32, but seven points from McGlensey in a span of 33 seconds touched off a 24-3 run that gave Gettysburg a commanding 24-9 advantage with 11:00 left in the half.

A layup by Justin Fried temporarily halted the Bullets’ run, but Scranton would get no closer en route to its seventh straight loss. Erik Fromm (Swedesboro, NJ/Kingsway Regional) converted two layups in a 10-4 run that pushed the lead to 34-15 and Gettysburg closed the half on a 12-2 run thanks to five points from Todd Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal).

The Bullets enjoyed their biggest lead at 66-31 after a pair of Whelan free throws with 13:32 remaining.

Gettysburg freshmen Mike Beck (Clearwater, FL/Clearwater), Brian Sateja (Morristown, NJ/Delbarton School) and Julius Redd (Gaithersburg, MD/Magruder) all saw their first collegiate varsity action against the Royals. Beck and Sateja scored four points apiece.

Glaser attempted only one shot in 17 minutes and was held scoreless for the first time since late in the 2001-02 season. Oloruntoba’s 13-point effort was his second highest of the season, behind a 14-point outing at Franklin & Marshall on Dec. 10.

The Bullets return to action on Wednesday at Johns Hopkins. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
