Gettysburg rallies, falls short at Johns Hopkins, 70-67

Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. – Matt Righter hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 54 seconds remaining to lift Johns Hopkins over Gettysburg 70-67 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s basketball action on Wednesday.

Righter’s only field goal of the night kept the Blue Jays (7-2, 3-0 CC) undefeated in conference play, despite the Bullets’ (5-5, 1-2 CC) rally from a 16-point first-half deficit to take a lead in the final minutes. Kevin Marquez led three JHU players in double figures with 20 points, hitting 7 of 10 shots overall and shooting 4-for-7 from 3-point range.

Eric Toback chipped in with 17 points and a game-high seven rebounds for the Blue Jays while Frank Mason added 14, including four clutch free throws in the final 33 seconds.

David Glaser (West Chester, PA/Malvern Prep) led Gettysburg with 28 points on 12-of-15 shooting, one point shy of his single-game career high. Kyle Jakobe (Baltimore, MD/McDonogh/Peddie [NJ]) added 11 points, but his game-tying 3-point attempt missed the mark in the final seconds.

In a pattern similar to heartbreaking losses at Franklin & Marshall and Navy earlier this season, the Bullets fell behind by double digits early, then rallied to take the lead before getting caught down the stretch.

After falling behind by 16 points late in the first half, Gettysburg pulled to within one point on eight occasions after the break before a Glaser layup with 2:10 left gave the Bullets their first lead since the opening minutes at 61-60.

Mason restored Johns Hopkins’ one-point lead with a basket on his squad’s next trip down the floor, but Dami Oloruntoba (Glenn Dale, MD/Eleanor Roosevelt) drilled his only 3-pointer of the night to make it 64-62 Gettysburg with 1:09 remaining.

Unfazed by misses on his first five shots, Righter took a pass from Toback and drained the go-ahead trey with 54 ticks left, giving the Blue Jays a 65-64 lead.

Mason followed a missed Bullet jumper with two free throws and Toback went 1-for-2 from the line following another empty Gettysburg possession to push the advantage to 68-64.

Jakobe drained a 3-pointer to make it a 68-67 game with nine seconds remaining, but Mason again went 2-for-2 from the charity stripe to set the final score.

Down 4-3 in the opening minutes, Johns Hopkins used six points from Marquez and five points from Mason to go on a 16-3 run that made it 19-7 with 12:09 left in the first half. The Blue Jays pushed the lead to 35-19 on a Toback jumper, but the Bullets closed out the half on a 15-2 run that pulled them within three at 37-34.

Jakobe’s other 3-pointer of the night started the burst while Glaser contributed a layup and 3-point play down the first-half stretch. JHU also helped Gettysburg’s cause with five turnovers in the final three minutes before halftime.

Todd Brady (Hancock, NH/ConVal) added eight points off the Bullet bench while Oloruntoba finished with five points and a team-high six rebounds.

Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday at home against Muhlenberg. Game time is 3 p.m.
