Gettysburg battles Franklin & Marshall to 1-all final

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Mike Boyd scored the game-tying goal in the second half to send Gettysburg and Franklin & Marshall into double-overtime, finishing with a score of 1-1 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s soccer action on Sunday.

Chris Borcik (Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) put the Bullets on the board at the 10:31 mark with a sliding kick into the top right corner of the net, off a pass from Mike Leader (Hershey, PA/Hershey). Borcik, Gettysburg’s leading scorer, led the offensive attack with a four of his game-high six shots on goal.

Diplomat goalkeeper Edward Stelz retaliated after Borcik’s goal went above his hands, making eight saves against the strong Gettysburg attack in the first half. The Bullets fired 12 of their 19 shots in the first stanza, including a Leader header that Stelz’s fingers just tipped sending it high over the goal.

Franklin & Marshall silenced Gettysburg and took control of the game in the second half, outshooting the Bullets 6-1. After seven corner kick chances and several scoring opportunities, the Diplomats finally converted when Boyd grabbed a Brandon Corday pass from the right side and knocked it into the net in the 76th minute, tying the game at 1-all.

Brad Tabor (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) had the only Gettysburg opportunity to score with fewer than five minutes remaining in regulation, firing a shot on goal but Stelz was there to make his only save of the half.

David Pone (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown) took his two shots on goal in the first overtime period, but couldn’t get past Stelz, while Borcik sent a shot high.

In a final attempt to take the win, Ben Wilson fired a shot straight into the hands of Gettysburg goalkeeper Nick Wells-Bundtzen (Williamstown, MA/Mt. Greylock). Wells-Bundtzen made six saves, while Stelz ended with a game-high 13 stops.

The Bullets outshot the Diplomats 19-15, while Franklin & Marshall had a 13-4 corner kick advantage.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday at No. 2 Johns Hopkins. Game time is 7 p.m.
