Gettysburg sweeps Muhlenberg to win 16th straight

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – Three Gettysburg players finished the night with nine kills as the Bullets defeated Muhlenberg 3-0 in Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball action on Tuesday.

Jessica Cortese (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield), Nicole Barr (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) and Erica Rau (Oakland Park, FL/Pine Crest) all ended with a team-best nine kills for Gettysburg (18-2, 7-0 CC), who won its 16th straight match and improved to 45-3 since Sept. 19 of last year.

The Mules (8-12, 2-4 CC) hung close in games one and two, but the Bullets asserted themselves in game three for the sweep. Gettysburg took game one 30-21 and game two by a 30-26 final before walking away with a 30-12 game-three victory.

Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) put up 35 assists while Steph Vial (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) steadied the defense with 17 digs.

Katie Heffner (Easton, PA/Easton) and Erin Barkdoll (Dover, PA/Dover) contributed to the attack with eight and seven kills, respectively.

Cortese added two aces while Smith and Margaret Hallahan (Huntingdon, PA/Huntingdon) added one apiece. Rau and Heffner had two block assists each.

With the victory, the Bullets recorded their 30th consecutive win over a CC foe, and can clinch the first playoff spot with a victory over McDaniel on Tuesday, scheduled for Nov. 6 and 7.

Gettysburg returns to action on Friday at the Cal State Hayward Tournament. The Bullets open play against No. 5 La Verne at 1 p.m. (PDT), and meet up with No. 8 Central at 5 p.m.
