Gettysburg comes back, holds on for 2-1 win at Muhlenberg

Box Score

ALLENTOWN, Pa.Becky Latta (West Chester, PA/Henderson) scored the go-ahead goal with 15:49 remaining and the Gettysburg defense held strong to give the 16th-ranked Bullets a 2-1 victory at Muhlenberg in Centennial Conference (CC) field hockey action on Wednesday.

After Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville) tied the game in the 46th minute, Latta took a pass from Maura Downey (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) to give Gettysburg (8-3, 5-1 CC) its first win in Allentown since 1998.

Sara Levin scored the lone goal for the Mules (8-5, 3-3 CC), who entered the game as the CC’s top-ranked defense, allowing 0.72 goals per game.

Off a restart from just outside the circle, Kelley Mishler (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) sent a ball to the middle of the circle, where Goddu collected it and went around a pair of defenders and found an opening in the right side of the cage to knot the game at 1, and shift momentum to the visitors.

Taking its second consecutive penalty corner, Latta redirected a direct pass from Downey through the defense and to the backboard to give the Bullets the lead for good.

At the 36:10 mark, Levin rebounded a LisaAnn Polt shot off Katherine Corkhill’s (Paoli, PA/Academy of Notre Dame) lone save of the game to give Muhlenberg a 1-0 lead.

Neither team took control in the first half with both teams having a pair of shots. The best opportunity for either team came in the 30th minute off Gettysburg’s fifth penalty corner of the half. Katie Lowe (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) ripped a shot from the top-left of the arc, but Sarah Fosdick stepped in front of the cage for the defensive save.

Both teams finished with five shots apiece, but the Bullets ended with an 8-4 edge in penalty corners.

Lauren Schram made two saves for the Mules.

Gettysburg improved to 6-0 on the road with the victory, but surrendered a goal for the first time since the season-opening 4-1 win at Eastern Mennonite.

The Bullets return to action on Saturday at home against Washington. Game time is 1 p.m.
