Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Zach DiIonno threw for 280 yards and three touchdowns to lead Johns Hopkins over Gettysburg 37-17 in Centennial Conference (CC) football action on Saturday.

DiIonno found Brian Wolcott on touchdown passes of 3 and 5 yards, and connected with Anthony Triplin on an 18-yard score to lift the Blue Jays (5-1, 2-1 CC) to their 10th consecutive win over the Bullets (0-6, 0-2 CC). Wolcott and Triplin combined for 22 receptions and 234 receiving yards on the afternoon.

JHU running backs Adam Cook and T.J. Lyons were held to a combined 82 yards on the ground, but each rushed for one touchdown to key the win. Adam Colicchio made two interceptions for the Blue Jays, who finished with four picks while holding Gettysburg to 219 total yards.

Tom Sturges (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) carried 28 times for 77 yards and gave the Bullets their only lead of the day at 10-7 with his first collegiate touchdown late in the second quarter. Making his first start at quarterback since opening day, senior Joe Gossweiler (Florham Park, NJ/Hanover Park) completed 10 of 23 passes for 104 yards.

Fueled by the CC’s top passing attack, Johns Hopkins used 30 straight points to continue its recent dominance in the series.

Trailing 10-7 following Sturges’ 1-yard touchdown run with 3:05 left in the half, the Blue Jays struck twice to take a 17-10 lead into the locker room. DiIonno marched his squad 69 yards on six plays, completing four passes to Triplin on the first drive, the last toss an 18-yarder for the touchdown and a 14-10 lead with 1:21 left in the half.

Johns Hopkins forced a three-and-out and used all three of its time outs to get the ball back with 32 seconds left. DiIonno hit Wolcott on a 28-yard strike to the Gettysburg 37 and Cook ran 11 yards to the 26 before Ben Scott made a career-long 43-yard field goal as time expired.

After halftime, the Blue Jays widened the lead, holding the Bullets to 50 yards of total offense and ending eight of their nine possessions with an interception or punt.

Colicchio’s first interception of the day started a nine-play, 44-yard scoring drive midway through the third quarter. DiIonno’s 11-yard pass to Wolcott on third-and-7 at the Gettysburg 18 kept the drive alive and a pass interference call set up Cook’s two-yard touchdown run to make it 24-10.

Colicchio intercepted Gossweiler again with 3:59 left in the third quarter and JHU drove 69 yards on 10 plays to take a 30-10 lead. Triplin hauled in receptions of 14 and 15 yards to key the drive before Lyons scored on a 1-yard run with 45.7 seconds left in the quarter.

The onset of a thunderstorm before the ensuing kickoff led to a 45-minute lightning delay that cleared the field and the stadium. When play resumed, Johns Hopkins made it 37-10 when DiIonno found Wolcott for a five-yard touchdown with 6:18 left, a drive set up by Matt Campbell’s 25-yard interception return into Bullet territory.

Gettysburg scored its final touchdown when Scott Sheppard (Berkeley Heights, NJ/Governor Livingston) returned his first collegiate interception 40 yards to the Blue Jay 1 and Jerry Jones (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape) punched into the end zone on the next play.

DiIonno’s first touchdown pass of the day, a 3-yard fade to Wolcott, gave the visitors a 7-0 lead on their opening drive. Grant Acker (Howell, NJ/Peddie) converted a 29-yard field goal for Gettysburg’s first points of the day and the Bullets used an eight-play, 72-yard second-quarter drive to go ahead 10-7, their first lead against Johns Hopkins since the 2000 season.

Triplin finished with a career-high 13 catches for 123 yards, the second highest single-game receptions total in program history. Wolcott made nine grabs for 111 yards. Matt Hagel led the Blue Jay defense with seven tackles and Brian Cook recorded a pair of sacks.

Acker paced the Gettysburg defense with 12 tackles, including 11 solo hits and three tackles for loss.

The Bullets return to action on Saturday at home against Ursinus. Game time is 1 p.m.
