GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Christina DiTucci (E. Rochester, NY/Our Lady of Mercy) scored the eventual game-winner to help No. 20 Gettysburg defeat Muhlenberg 2-1 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's soccer action on Saturday.
With the win, the Bullets (10-2-2, 7-0 CC) remained perfect in conference play and extended their unbeaten streak to 12 games, matching the stretch in 1997. Gettysburg's win avenged a 1-0 loss to the defending CC champion Mules (8-4-2, 4-2-1 CC) in the 2003 conference final.
After Rebecca Armstrong took the first shot by anyone 12 minutes into the game, Katie Myers (Randallstown, MD/WSTES) had four straight scoring opportunities for the Bullets but couldn't convert.
With 1:30 left in the first half, Liz Feldhusen (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough Reg.) gained control of the ball at midfield and sent Colleen Stuart (Centennial, CO/Arapahoe) on goal. Stuart got past Muhlenberg goalkeeper Kayla Boisvert to an open net, but sent her shot wide left, closing the first half with no score.
Myers opened up the second half with another shot that was deflected by Boisvert right into the path of Katie Ferraro (Westminster, CO/St. Mary's Academy) who sent the ball past Boisvert, putting the Bullets up 1-0 at the 46:26 mark.
DiTucci netted the eventual game-winner in the 51st minute off a pass from Jenny Line (Carlisle, PA/Carlisle) who gained possession out of a scramble in front of the net.
Ashley Reed pulled the Mules within one at the 71:07 mark. Amy Schmidt fired a shot on goal that Gettysburg goalkeeper Allie Loeb (Bellemead, NJ/Montgomery) deflected away, but Reed was there to collect the rebound and send it into the left side of the net.
Muhlenberg's last opportunity to tie the game came with 20 seconds left with Reed firing another shot that was cleared by Laurie Goon (Baltimore, MD/Loch Raven).
The Bullets outshot the Mules 10-6 and had a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Gettysburg returns to conference action on Wednesday at Franklin & Marshall. Game time is 4:00 p.m.
