GETTYSBURG, Pa. Chris Borcik
(Reisterstown, MD/Franklin) scored the game-winning goal to seal Gettysburgs win over Washington 2-1 in Centennial Conference (CC)
mens soccer action on Saturday.
The
Bullets dominated the first half, outshooting
the Shoremen 10-2, but couldnt
convert on the attempts. After a scoreless 44 minutes, Matt Varner (Medford,
NJ/Shawnee)
put the Bullets (7-5-1, 4-1-1 CC) on the board with his
first career goal. With 23 seconds remaining in the first
half, Varner headed the ball out of a scramble in front
of the net.
Just
over 10 minutes into the second half, Brad
Tabor (Kinnelon, NJ/Kinnelon) fired
a shot that drew Washingtons backup goalkeeper Sean Ferri out for the save, allowing
Borcik to grab the rebound and
send it past Ferri for the game-winner. The goal was Borciks
team-leading eighth of the season.
Jonnie Jenkins brought the Shoremen within one, scoring a
goal from about 10 yards out at 69:26, but it wouldnt
be enough to get Washington back into the
game.
The
Shoremens best opportunity
to tie the game came with just under 10 minutes left when
Tim Kerr fired a shot from the
18-yard box, but Brendan
Cain (Derwood, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) cleared
the ball before it got to the goal.
Gettysburg goalkeeper Nick
Wells-Bundtzen (Williamstown,
MA/Mt.
Greylock)
made three saves in the winning effort.
The
Bullets outshot Washington
25-8, and had a 12-2 edge in corner kicks.
Gettysburg returns to action on Tuesday against Delaware Valley. Game time is 7 p.m.
