COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Chris Borcik (Reisterstown,
MD/Franklin) scored twice off assists from Mike
Tirney (Springfield, PA/Springfield) to lead Gettysburg
past Ursinus 3-0 in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s soccer
action on Saturday.
David Pone (Bordentown, NJ/Bordentown)
added his first goal of the season as the Bullets (6-4, 3-0
CC) won for the 11th time in their last 12 meetings with the
Bears (3-5, 0-3 CC). Backed by a defense that held Ursinus
to three shots, Nick Wells-Bundtzen (Williamstown, MA/Mt.
Greylock) made two saves to record his third shutout
of the season.
Borcik needed fewer than five minutes
to put Gettysburg ahead to stay, converting Tirney’s first
collegiate assist at 4:40 for a 1-0 lead. Pone, the squad’s
assist leader, cracked the goal column with an unassisted
tally in the 39th minute to make it 2-0 at halftime.
Tirney set up Borcik again in the 69th
minute to close the scoring. With his two goals on the day,
Borcik took over the team for goals (6) and points (13).
Pone finished with a team-high three of
the Bullets’ 12 shots. Gettysburg also held a 9-2 advantage
in corner kicks.
Bear goalie Brian Berkowitz
finished with five saves.
Gettysburg returns to action on Friday
at home against Franklin & Marshall. Game time is 7 p.m.
