GETTYSBURG, Pa.
Sophomore Maura Downey (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) and junior
Meg Goddu (Chadds
Fords, PA/Camp Hill) combined on the first four
goals for No. 19 Gettysburg in a 5-0 Centennial Conference
(CC) win over visiting Haverford in field hockey action
on Saturday.
Downey
tallied two goals in the first 10 minutes to stake the Bullets
(6-2, 3-0 CC) to an early 2-0 lead before Goddu notched
the next two one on either side of the intermission.
Katie
Norton had two of the six shots for the Fords (2-8,
0-3 CC), who fell to 0-12 all-time against Gettysburg.
Amie Roe made 11 saves in goal to increase
her conference-leading total to 105 on the season.
In the sixth minute, Downey
rebounded a Bridget
Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor
Mifflin) shot off Roes first save of the day
to give the Bullets an early 1-0 lead, marking the seventh
straight contest that Gettysburg has struck first.
At the 9:36 mark, Downey
added her team-leading eighth goal of the season when she
got her stick on a long pass in from Goddu. Goddu sent a
long ball in from the right side to the far post where Downey
was waiting and found the backboard behind the keeper for
her third two-goal game of the season.
At the 21-minute mark,
Downey
returned the favor and played a ball in from the left side,
where Goddu collected it and slipped it into the back of
the cage for a 3-0 lead. It was Downeys first collegiate
assist.
On a penalty corner in
the 66th minute, Goddu found the backboard once
again on her team-high seventh shot, redirecting a pass
in from Becky
Latta (West Chester, PA/Henderson) to give
Latta her team-best fourth assist of the season.
Senior Katie
Lowe (Setauket,
NY/Ward Melville) made it 5-0, trickling
one just over the line in the games final minute for
her first goal since the opening game of the season.
Haverfords best scoring
chance came when Jen Chu
took a penalty stroke in the 53rd minute, but
Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, PA/Academy of
Notre Dame) was right there to make the save and preserve the fifth shutout of her rookie
season. Corkhill made three saves
on the afternoon.
With the fifth shutout,
it is the first time the Bullets have held five of their
first eight opponents off the scoreboard since 1980, the
same season Gettysburg
won its only national championship.
The
Bullets return to action at Shirk Field at Musselman
Stadium against No. 6 Franklin
& Marshall on Wednesday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
