GETTYSBURG, Pa.
If there was ever a day that Gettysburg needed a player
to record a hat trick, junior Meg Goddu (Chadds Ford, PA/Unionville)
picked a good day for her first, propelling the 16th-ranked
Bullets to a 4-3 victory over visiting McDaniel in Centennial
Conference (CC) field hockey action on Wednesday.
Playing through a heavy
mist all afternoon on a wet Memorial Field, Gettysburg (10-3,
7-1 CC) recorded its third consecutive one-goal victory
this season and sixth straight in the series with the Green
Terror (8-5, 3-4 CC) to secure a spot in the upcoming conference
tournament on Nov. 3, 6-7.
Jamie
Nash led a strong second-half McDaniel charge to
push the Bullets to the limit, and create the highest scoring
game in the series since Gettysburgs 6-1 victory in 1998.
Goddu got the middle goal
of her three-goal outing to give the Bullets the final lead
they would need for the victory. Immediately after Dani Unflat
tied the game at 1 off a scramble in front of the cage,
Goddu and Bridget Seidel (Mohnton, PA/Governor
Mifflin) broke on goal from the whistle. Seidel
sent a pass right for Goddu, who rocketed it home for the
2-1 advantage 13 seconds after Unflat knotted the contest.
A minute a half out of
halftime, Seidel collected a ball in front of the cage and
sent it left where Maura
Downey (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) redirected
it behind McDaniel keeper Nicole
Cahill to stretch the lead to 3-1.
In the 52nd
minute, Nash tallied her first goal of the season, sending
a ball through to defense to pull the Green Terror within
one.
Goddu netted the eventual
game-winner and completed her hat trick tipping
a Downey
pass up and behind Cahill just over a minute later.
Nash drew the visitors
back within one, scoring unassisted at the 64-minute mark.
Goddu got her day started
19:02 into the contest when she collected a ball in the
midst of a scramble and pushed it over the line for a 1-0
Gettysburg
lead.
McDaniel had one final
chance to force overtime when the Green Terror were awarded
a penalty corner with no time on the clock, but the Bullet
defense came up with the stop to secure the win.
Both teams finished with
10 shots, but Gettysburg held a 7-4 advantage in penalty corners.
Katherine
Corkhill (Paoli, PA/Academy
of Notre Dame)
made four saves to pick up the 10th win of her
rookie season while Cahill made three stops at the other
end of the field.
The
Bullets meet up with Ursinus in
its final home game on Saturday in a battle for first place.
Game time is 1 p.m.
