Gettysburg sweeps Dickinson to finish perfect in CC

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Jessica Cortese (Lancaster, PA/Hempfield) recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 15 kills and 15 digs to lead Gettysburg to a sweep of Dickinson in Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball action on Tuesday.

Classmate Nicole Barr (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) matched Cortese for team-high honors with 15 kills as the Bullets (23-4, 10-0 CC) won their 14th straight match against the Red Devils (15-9, 6-3 CC) to complete a second straight undefeated conference slate.

Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley) chipped in with 46 assists and a team-high two service aces while Steph Vial (Hanover, PA/Delone Catholic) steadied the defense with 16 digs.

Margie Hatch led the Dickinson attack with seven kills while Ashley Young added six. Jen Voltz put up 18 set assists.

Trailing 26-23 in game three, Gettysburg got a side-out on an Erin Barkdoll (Dover, PA/Dover) kill and Diana McNamee (King of Prussia, PA/Villa Maria Academy) took the serve. Aided by a pair of kills by Smith and Cortese – including the final of the match – and her lone ace of the night, McNamee brought the Bullets all the way back and to a 30-26 victory to secure the sweep.

Cortese opened the match with her only ace of the match, and combined with Smith to serve Gettysburg to an early 5-1 lead in game one.

Four straight Bullet errors evened the game at 5-all before back-to-back kills from Barr gave Gettysburg a 7-5 lead that it did not relinquish the rest of the way.

Another pair of Barr kills and Red Devil ball-handling error gave the Bullets their biggest lead at 26-20 and forced a Dickinson timeout.

The Red Devils got the next two points but could not get any closer, falling 30-24.

Behind her only two aces of the night, Kali Enyeart served Dickinson to an early 5-0 lead in game two before the Bullets came storming back off strong serving from Smith.

An ace from Smith coupled with three kills apiece from Barr and Erica Rau (Oakland Park, FL/Pine Crest) and two from Barkdoll, Gettysburg opened an 11-5 advantage.

The lead swelled to 29-19 on a Cortese kill, but Kara Carmack served seven points in a row to pull within 29-26 and force the Bullets lone timeout of the match.

Out of the timeout, Hillary Prutzman (Liberty, PA/Bethlehem) put down a Smith assist to get the 30-26 victory.

Gettysburg returns to action on Friday at the Carnegie Mellon Tournament. The Bullets open with Elizabethtown at 6 p.m.
