Box Score
CARLISLE, Pa. As
the second player to go in the third round of penalty-stroke
competition, Becky
Harker rolled her shot
into the right side of the cage to give Dickinson a 2-1
victory over No. 17 Gettysburg in Centennial Conference
(CC) field hockey action on Wednesday.
Goalkeepers Katherine
Corkhill (Paoli,
PA/Academy
of Notre Dame)
for the Bullets (10-5, 6-3 CC) and Tara
McFadden for the Red Devils (10-6, 7-2 CC) came
up with big saves throughout the game and the penalty-stroke
competition.
Corkhill
finished with five saves to her credit and stopped seven
and forced three wide of the first 11 strokes
she saw. McFadden made 13 saves during play before stopping
six and forcing five wide of the 12 strokes
she saw.
In the first round of penalty
strokes, three of the first four players went wide before
Meg Goddu (Unionville,
PA/Chadds Ford)
got her attempt by McFadden.
Sarah
Hyslop answered with a goal off Corkhills
stick and across the line.
None of the 10 competitors
converted in the second session to force the sudden-victory
third round.
Corkhill
made the save on Hyslops first attempt, and Bridget Seidel (Mohnton,
PA/Governor
Mifflin) went wide left. Harker
converted her attempt, and McFadden made the stop on Goddus
attempt to give Dickinson its fourth-straight one-goal victory over Gettysburg.
With 1 minute, 4 seconds
remaining in the first stanza, Katie Austin got the Red Devils
on the board. Laura
Williams
shot from the high-right side of the arc, drawing Corkhill
and defense. Corkhill made the
initial save, but Austin was waiting on the
back post for the rebound and goal.
Kelley
Mishler (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown)
got the equalizer in the 45th minute, breaking
a 286-minute scoring drought against Dickinson
that dated back to 2000.
On one of the squads
14 penalty corner, Becky Latta (West Chester,
PA/Henderson) sent a ball low where Seidel
tapped it left and Mishler stuck it behind McFaddan
to knot the game at 1.
The Bullets carried play
throughout much of the final 25 minutes of regulation and
throughout the first extra session, but were unable to capitalize.
The Orange & Blue fired
seven shots in the first overtime, including a series of
three straight. However, the Dickinson defense held strong
and neither team could capitalize on either of their second-overtime
chances to force Gettysburgs first game to reach penalty
strokes since 1999, when the Bullets lost three penalty-stroke
decision, including two to Johns Hopkins one of which
came in the NCAA qualifying game.
By the end of the 100 minutes,
the visitors outshot Dickinson
21-11, and had a 14-8 advantage in penalty corners.
By virtue of a 4-0 Franklin
& Marshall victory
against Muhlenberg, Gettysburg
has secured the fourth seed in the upcoming CC playoffs.
The Bullets will meet the No. 5 seed in the tournaments
first round at home on Wednesday.
Gettysburg returns to action at No. 2 Messiah on Thursday.
Game time is 3 p.m.
