Messiah blanks Gettysburg, 5-0

Box Score

GRANTHAM, Pa. – Jenna Schwind tallied two unassisted goals to lead No. 2 Messiah to a 5-0 win over 17th-ranked Gettysburg in non-conference field hockey action on Thursday.

Freshmen goalkeepers Katherine Corkhill (Paoli, PA/Academy of Notre) and Allie Duggan (Rockville, MD/Colonel Zadok Magrauder) split time between the pipes for the Bullets (10-6), who dropped their third straight contest. Corkhill got the start and played the first half, allowing three goals while making 10 saves while facing 15 shots. Duggan saw action in the second half, stopping seven shots and allowing the other two scores, facing 18 shots.

Erica Nelson stopped both shots she saw for the Falcons (16-1), posting her seventh individual shutout of the season.

In the 16th minute, Lindsey Hunter finally converted on Messiah’s 10th shot of the game for a 1-0 lead. Danae Chambers played a ball right to the waiting stick of Hunter, who slid the ball behind Corkhill to give the Falcons all they would need for the victory.

Eight and a half minutes later, Chambers – the Division III career scoring leader – scored a goal of her own on a drive in from the left side.

Schwind got the first of her two markers five minutes before halftime, rocketing a shot from just inside the circle for the 3-0 halftime advantage.

Maura Downey (Lancaster, PA/Lancaster Catholic) tallied Gettysburg’s only first-half shot, sending a ball in from the right side in the stanza’s final minute.

Schwind made it 4-0 in the 62nd minute, rebounding an Aftan Fisher shot and save.

On Messiah’s 12th and final penalty corner, Heather Kresge collected the initial pass from Fisher and sent a long shot in from the top of the arc to set the final margin.

The shutout marks the first time this season that the Bullets have been held off the scoreboard, but was the seventh time in the last nine trips to Messiah that Gettysburg has failed to score.

Gettysburg returns to action at No. 16 Mary Washington on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
