Pa. Seniors Jessica Cortese
(Lancaster, PA/Hempfield)
and Nicole Barr (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) were named to the all-tournament team after
leading the Gettysburg volleyball team to a 3-1 weekend
at the Carnegie Mellon Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
In the title
tilt, the Bullets (26-5) fell to No. 25 Carnegie Mellon,
3-1. The Tartans (25-5) won easily in game one 30-17 before
Gettysburg
put up a fight in the rest of the match. CMU prevailed 31-29
in game two, and the Bullets took a 30-28 game-three victory,
but the Tartans prevailed with a 30-25 win in the fourth
game.
On Saturday
morning, the Bullets advanced to the championship match
with a sweep of Allegheny (35-33, 30-26, 30-18).
In the match,
Cortese led the way with 12 kills while Erin Barkdoll
(Dover, PA/Dover) and Barr
added 11 each. Shannan Smith (Milmont Park, PA/Ridley)
tallied 47 assists.
Gettysburg got strong serving from Steph Vial (Hanover,
PA/Delone Catholic)
and Smith, who recorded six and four aces, respectively.
On defense,
Vial led the way with 16 digs while Smith and Cortese
tallied 12 and 11, respectively. Barr had two blocks, and
Barkdoll had one.
On Friday,
the Bullets got a 15-13 victory in game five against Elizabethtown
and defeated Buffalo
State,
3-1.
Against
the Blue Jays, Gettysburg alternated victories,
winning games one and three 30-19 and 30-23, respectively.
Elizabethtown took 30-26
and 30-25 decision in the second and fourth games.
Barr had
her first 20/20 performance of the season, notching 25 kills
and 20 digs. Cortese had 17 kills
and 26 digs. Barkdoll also added
12 kills while Vial join Cortese
with a team-best 26 digs.
Smith put
up 51 assists while Vial served three aces. Barr notched
six total blocks while Erica Rau (Oakland Park, FL/Pine
Crest) added five.
Against
the Bengels, Cortese and Barkdoll had 11 kills apiece, and Smith tallied 30 assists
and five aces. Vial had 11 digs and five aces.
Cortese and Barr chipped in on defense with 15 and 10 digs,
respectively.
Gettysburg returns to action next weekend when it hosts the Centennial
Conference tournament.
